COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In the hop capital of Belgium, Hommel is the word for humulus, the plant genus where hops reside. Our Hommel Bier defies tradition by combining North American malts, Pacific Northwest hops, and a Belgian yeast strain. The result is a beer that combines earthy and spicy tones from the yeast with a slight orange note contributed by the hops. We think it’s buzzworthy.

It’s really earthy and yeasty, with almost a lager-like finish. Hops are lingering, but not tingling if ya know what I mean. Reminds me very much of the Poperings Hommel Bier. It’s a Belgian taste that takes some getting used to.

Draft at Gollem in Antwerp during their American weekend. Very thick, lacing, coarse, snow white head over a cloudy, deep peach blonde beer. Aroma of ripe pink grapefruit, moldy lemon, papaja, dough, honey liqueur, strawberry, ripe banana, mango, butter, green plum. Fruity onset, mango, banana, peach, softish carbo, sourish kiwi-like undercurrent, smooth, slick and ’fluffy’ malt body, sweetish, honeyish and a tad caramelly while the fruitiness goes on on top of it, yeasty touch in the end paired with a New World hop character, less bittering than aromatic with retronasal orange, pine and grapefruit effects. Could be regarded as a "Belgian IPA", which was apparently the intention, the name referring to the Van Eecke classic which is otherwise very different altogether. One for those who have no problems with Belgian yeast traits mingling with New World hop fragrance so I can imagine a concept like this will divide opinions, but in my case: very enjoyable, rich and fun beer to drink.

250 ml. draft @ Gollem. Very hazy orange, creamy white head. Nose is some milky yeast with pleasing mango, orange peel, hop is mellow, light bread. Taste is milky, grainy, mango hops, low passionfruit, quite milky & grainy, some orange sweetness, low grass. Drinks well, not bad but I feel like the BE yeast strain isn’t the optimal choice here. A bit too milky & sweet to fully work for me but not bad overal.

I had this at Global Brew. Pours gold with a white head. Taste sweet, Belgian yeast, fruity. I thought this was good. I would drink this again. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

On tap at the bridge. Clear gold pour with thin super lacy white head. Aroma is really grassy, light fruitiness, hoppy. Taste is grainy, light fruitiness, piney, bone dry. Palate is light med bodied with good carbonation, very dry. Tasty.

Bottle. Moderate roasted grain for the malt, light to moderate herbs and citrus for the hops, moderate dough for the yeast, with dried fruit in the background. Head is large, fizzy/frothy, white, with good lacing and good legs, and is mostly diminishing. Color is murky medium amber/tan. Flavor starts lightly sweet and moderately acidic, then finishes lightly acidic and lightly to moderately bitter. Palate is medium, oily, with a fizzy carbonation and a tart finish. An easy drinking Belgian Ale, perfect accompaniment for a big dinner

Draft: Orange-pulp looking appearance, with an off-white head. Orange-malt and grapefruit-peel scent. Yeast, orange malt, fruit flavour. APA-like hopping... Really wonderful.

Moderate grain aroma with a very light amount of hops. Hazy golden color with a very large white head. Good balance of malt and hops in the flavor with a lightly bitter finish.

Another great offering from an amazing brewery! Dry, effervescent, love the hop aroma. Perfect table beer for me!

On tap. Pours a cloudy pale amber with a thin but resilient white head. Aroma is musty with coriander and other spices. Taste is sweet pale malt, honey, peppery, bready, yeasty with a distinct hop bitterness not all that typical in a Belgian ale. Good, quite good.

Light color, with grassy and with a peppery and bitter finish. Notes of pine resin and a long finish.
