Collaboration with Hopleaf! We started by brewing a traditional German Berlinerweiss—which Napolean’s men called the Champagne of the North—then tweaked it with a homemade tea blend to impart a slight apricot hue and botanical aromatics.

Bottle from Argonaut in Denver. Pours a hazy deep yellow color with a medium white head that dies quickly to leave a thin film on top. Nose is very funky with hints of brett. Moderately fruity. Secondary notes of earth, tea leaves, dirt. Taste is initially very puckering. After that, a bright fruity tropical flavor emerges. Taste is really where this beer shines. I was worried with the aroma. Highly carbed and quenching.

750 ml bottle.

Pours a slightly pink-hued. Tart lactic nose, some fruit and berry aromas. Pretty clean, straight-ahead Berlinner weisse base layered with tropical notes. It’s good enough, and very hard to point to any flaws, but nor am I feeling any over-the-top love here. After a glass I’ve had more than enough tartness and I’m not quite sure what to do with the remainder of the bottle.

Aroma like smelling salts. GOOD MORNING! The lemony tartness is bracing, but behind it are wheaty funk, pear juice and hibiscus. Fruity tea notes up front in the flavor -- floral leaves, papaya -- but the swallow delivers a whip-crack of lemony acidity, followed by gentle fruity peach and pear sweetness. The tea blend accents the underlying Berliner but doesn’t get in the way. Very nice.
