COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Vermilion is a big, rich English style Barleywine that, as its name suggests, has tints of ruby around the edges of its brown body, with a toffee, caramel, toasted pecan sweetness that is kept in balance with a smooth, alcohol warmth, and slightly fruity American hop note. It may be enjoyed right away, or allowed to age in the bottle.

Tap at brewers republic, Colorado Springs. Caramel and toffee malt aroma with notes of dark fruit and just a hint of booze. Pours dark brown with a ruby hue and a thin tan head and very little lacing. Sweet caramel malt with some toffee notes to start. Finishes dry with notes of dark fruit and some hop bitterness at the very end. Nice, well balanced barley wine.

Pour on tap at Black Bottle, dark brownish pour with off white head, aroma brought notes of caramel, toffee, dark fruit, hints of pecan, nuts, slight booze into brown sugar, pretty nice. Taste is a mix of nuts, pecans, toffee, caramel, slight booze into brown sugar, finishing sweet. Pretty tasty for what it is.

On tap at Quarry House Tavern in Silver Spring, MD. Nearly opaque, mahogany-red with a large, creamy, khaki head and excellent lacing. Aroma of toffee, booze, caramel, golden raisins, peaches, pine and raisin bread. Taste of caramel, sweet peaches, pine, toffee, booze, orange, brown sugar, raisins and blackberries. Very full body and medium/low carbonization. A complex and delicious barleywine with a nice mix of sweet malt and fruity hops. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

From Keir. Thanks! A: Dark red bordering on brown. Very thin mocha head. Decent lacing. N: Cherry, toffee, cocoa, caramale, maltballs with a touch of hops. T: Chalky malt with a solid hop base. Typical of the style. Medium heavy and a touch oily. O: A positive rendition of the style that’s flavorful and nearly put me to bed.

750 mL bottle from Wine Warehouse, Charlottesville, about a year old. Pours a hazy dark rust color with a thin fizzy tan head that fades almost instantly. Aroma of toffee, anise, apple, dark fruits. The taste is toffee malt, maple syrup, anise, spice, mild butter hops. Medium-full bodied, low carbonation, decent balance, fairly strong heat. Hard to be disappointed when your expectations are so low, but this is decent.

Bottle @ Chriso’s pre-GBBF Shindig. Brown with a small head. A bit of vanilla and toffee. Notes of licorice. Herbal spiciness. The taste is smokey herbs. Chocolate. Toffee and cocoa. Moderately spicy. Full body, soft carbonation. Not bad.
