Vermilion is a big, rich English style Barleywine that, as its name suggests, has tints of ruby around the edges of its brown body, with a toffee, caramel, toasted pecan sweetness that is kept in balance with a smooth, alcohol warmth, and slightly fruity American hop note. It may be enjoyed right away, or allowed to age in the bottle.

Pours dark amber with a small offwhite head. Aroma of malt, caramel, brown sugar, oak, dark fruit. Taste is bready malt, caramel, marzipan, plums, figs, booze. Medium to full body, quite high carbonation for the style / ABV, slight alcoholic finish. Decent, but rather sweet

On tap at Quarry House Tavern in Silver Spring, MD. Nearly opaque, mahogany-red with a large, creamy, khaki head and excellent lacing. Aroma of toffee, booze, caramel, golden raisins, peaches, pine and raisin bread. Taste of caramel, sweet peaches, pine, toffee, booze, orange, brown sugar, raisins and blackberries. Very full body and medium/low carbonization. A complex and delicious barleywine with a nice mix of sweet malt and fruity hops. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

From Keir. Thanks! A: Dark red bordering on brown. Very thin mocha head. Decent lacing. N: Cherry, toffee, cocoa, caramale, maltballs with a touch of hops. T: Chalky malt with a solid hop base. Typical of the style. Medium heavy and a touch oily. O: A positive rendition of the style that’s flavorful and nearly put me to bed.

750 mL bottle from Wine Warehouse, Charlottesville, about a year old. Pours a hazy dark rust color with a thin fizzy tan head that fades almost instantly. Aroma of toffee, anise, apple, dark fruits. The taste is toffee malt, maple syrup, anise, spice, mild butter hops. Medium-full bodied, low carbonation, decent balance, fairly strong heat. Hard to be disappointed when your expectations are so low, but this is decent.

Bottle provided by Ralf the angry German. Prost! A medium bodied Barleywine that is brown and a bit murky in the glass. Bigger plum finish than the rest of the big malt body.

750 ml bottle shared by phaleslu. Pours a slightly hazy amber color with a thin off white film. The aroma and flavor had caramel, maple, dark fruits, raisins, sweet, but not overly so, light spices , wood, mild bitterness at the finish. This was pretty tasty and had just enough other things going on to balance the sweetness of the malts.

Bottle at chriso’s Pre-GBBF Tasting 2013 - London. Pours hazy amber with a creamy, beige head. Ripe, aged fruits in the nose, some berries especially. Medium sweet flavor with rich peat and candied ham. Big bodied with fine carbonation. Sweet finish, lightly warming, with more smokey peat and ham. Nice, interesting.
