Vermilion is a big, rich English style Barleywine that, as its name suggests, has tints of ruby around the edges of its brown body, with a toffee, caramel, toasted pecan sweetness that is kept in balance with a smooth, alcohol warmth, and slightly fruity American hop note. It may be enjoyed right away, or allowed to age in the bottle.

On tap at Kellehers, Peoria. Dark pour with a tan head. Aroma is fruity and alcohol. Taste is dark fruits, roasted malt, a nice sweet aftertaste. Alc is more noticeable at the finish.

Bottle provided by Ralf the angry German. Prost! A medium bodied Barleywine that is brown and a bit murky in the glass. Bigger plum finish than the rest of the big malt body.

I smell bananas. Dark brown. Alot of brown sugar. Hot. No head. No lacing. Heavy.

Raisiny and cherry aromas, some caramel, hints of roasted grain. Murky bronze with burnt orange highlights, mostly fading off-white head. Mostly dry, big dried fruit flavors, figs, somewhat herbaceous. Full bodied, thick and chewy, savory sense of strength.

From Keir. Thanks! A: Dark red bordering on brown. Very thin mocha head. Decent lacing. N: Cherry, toffee, cocoa, caramale, maltballs with a touch of hops. T: Chalky malt with a solid hop base. Typical of the style. Medium heavy and a touch oily. O: A positive rendition of the style thatís flavorful and nearly put me to bed.

thereís a flycatcher with "vermilion" in its name, but the northern cardinal on the label makes sense, since itís a perennial, and of course the state bird. nobody else thinks this tastes smoked?

Bottle 75 cl. Pours a cloudy - almost opaque - dark brown with a smallish, beige head. Quite some charred wood in the nose combined with toast and burned caramel. Rich, sweet body, heavy caramel and again a fairly massive smoky note - very untraditional for the style. Some warming alcohol in the finish. 130913

aroma really illustrates what they mean by english style barleywine. gone are the massive hops that have been seen in the american rendition of the style and in their place is a nice intriguing mix of cherry, vanilla, anise, chocolate, and some peanut brittle. Beer is black with a light brown head and spotty lacing. Looks very rich. taste is caramel molasses, chocolate, vanilla. Medium to fuller body. Interesting, unique, and memorable.

Tap at brewers republic, Colorado Springs. Caramel and toffee malt aroma with notes of dark fruit and just a hint of booze. Pours dark brown with a ruby hue and a thin tan head and very little lacing. Sweet caramel malt with some toffee notes to start. Finishes dry with notes of dark fruit and some hop bitterness at the very end. Nice, well balanced barley wine.
