Just one sip of this Red Hopped Mama conjures up the history lesson we all learned as kids. Everyone knows the story of Captain Shaddock sailing from East India with pummel seeds in tow on his way to the Caribbean to change the face of fruit forever, but Shaddock could have never imagined that his Barbados forbidden fruit would find its way into the beer glass in front of you. From East India to the West Indies, from Texas to Comstock Park, the short legacy of this 300 year old little fruit that could, continues with you ordering up a cold one.

12 ounce can into pint glass, canned on 2/24/2016. Pours hazy golden orange color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense and fluffy white head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass. Aromas of grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, peach, lemon zest, orange peel, pine, cracker, bread, light honey, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Nice and and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of citrus/tropical/pine hops, grapefruit juice, and moderate pale malt notes; with solid strength. Taste of big grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, peach, lemon zest, orange peel, citrus rind, pine, cracker, bread, light honey, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Good amount of pine/citrus rind/grassy bitterness and light fruit tartness on the finish; with lingering notes of grapefruit, tangerine, peach, pineapple, lemon/orange rind, pine, and herbal/floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a while. Very nice complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/tropical/pine hops, grapefruit juice, and moderate pale malt flavors; with a good malt/bitterness balance; with light hop/grapefruit astringency lingering after the finish. Good amount of dryness from hop/grapefruit bitterness as well. Medium carbonation and light-medium body; with a very smooth, crisp, and sticky/resinous mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with zero warming present after the finish as expected of 5%. Overall this is a very good fruited IPA style. All around good complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/tropical/pine hops, grapefruit juice, and moderate pale malt flavors; and very smooth, crisp, and refreshing to drink; despite having some lingering flavor astringency. A very enjoyable offering.

UPDATED: APR 15, 2016 Aroma is citrus, tart, pine, almost sour, sour grapefruit I guess. Off-putting. Appearance is foggy orange, off white head. Taste is not good. Citrus, wheat, bitter pine, light tartness, I’m picking up some vinegar, way off. Mouthfeel is watery, light to medium body with light carbonation, wheat and sour aftertaste. Overall, this is closer to a Berliner Weisse in aroma and taste...and mouthfeel. Swing and a miss.

Pours a very murky orange-yellow with a foamy white head. Aroma is some citrus, some grapefruit, and light bread malts. Flavor is mostly grapefruit with very little hop character for an IPA. Sweet, with a thin body and no bitterness and not a lot of carbonation. I’m not sure this should be labeled an IPA but a fruit beer. Not really outstanding in either category, though. Not bad to drink, but doesn’t do much interesting as an IPA or a fruit beer.

On tap at Red Rock in Ypsilanti, Mi. Clear golden brew, no discernible head. Fantastic aroma of tart grapefruit / citrus. Taste is light bodied, dry, tart grapefruit / citrus hops emerge early in the swallow and flourish in the finish. Very hoppy but citrus done in a very light and agile manner - very fine.

UPDATED: SEP 20, 2015 I hate grapefruit....but I LOVE beer, so what does that mean when you combine the two? Gastronomic mayhem, the likes you don’t see often in these parts. While I can’t say I would go out of my way to EVER drink this again, I can also state without equivocation that I wouldn’t avoid this like I do, Coors Light. So while not a ringing endorsement of the type reserved for Blatz this beer is not the flavor-equivalent of a mouthful of horse dung.

On tap at the source. Pours a slightly hazy yellow. I had them re-pour the taster of this because there was no grapefruit and no hoppy character at all. The re-pour was the same and I was told that it was correct. No grapefruit or citrus at all. Slight bitter hoppiness and uninteresting.

Not bad! Kind of looks funky though... Murky... Like the waters of a polluted tributary, making it difficult to see the mutant gilled crocodiles lurking just below the surface.
