Just one sip of this Red Hopped Mama conjures up the history lesson we all learned as kids. Everyone knows the story of Captain Shaddock sailing from East India with pummel seeds in tow on his way to the Caribbean to change the face of fruit forever, but Shaddock could have never imagined that his Barbados forbidden fruit would find its way into the beer glass in front of you. From East India to the West Indies, from Texas to Comstock Park, the short legacy of this 300 year old little fruit that could, continues with you ordering up a cold one.

Tap: Extremely murky, dingy amber-yellow hybrid, closing in on full opacity with a lightly frothy, eggshell cap. Aroma has some sweet, juicy grapefruit notes, a hint of crushed vitamin (medicinal-ish) with some musty, back-end grains. I like the grapefruit vibe but the medicinal hints are getting in the way. Tastes like grapefruit shandy; big grapefruit juice presence without the typical sideways tartness or even bitterness... Medicinal notes are much less present on the palate than the aroma, which is good. Ends quite abruptly, finishes super clean. Where are the hops? Isnít this an IPA? Tastes more like a fruit beer, shandy, or even a wit... but not an IPA. Tasty, maybe Iím being generous because I like grapefruit so much. Improve the aroma a little & this could be a big hit.

Aroma of ruby red grapefruit. Tastes sweet, juicy, acidic and mildly bitter like the inner flesh of red grapefruit; it is almost like a cider. Palate, slightly fizzy. Overall; unique and enjoyable.

Tap. Opaque dark gold. Pretty refreshing. A bit yeasty/bready for an IPA--donít come to this beer for bitter.

Mild citrus hops and grapefruit all the way. This feels more like actual grapefruit juice than it does beer. Undertones of wheat. Itís crisp and refreshing, but not really what I expect from an IPA.

Tap at Hopcat, pours pretty bright, aroma is fruity, taste is fruity, a light bitterness and some nice fruitiness with the IPA and lots of citrus in there. Overall pretty nice.

On Draft at the HopCat. Pours a hazy yellow-orange with a white head. Aroma of grapefruit juice. Mild sweet malt. Some vague hoppiness. Flavor is bitter, mostly grapefruit juice and some citrus zest notes. Vague hoppiness is apparent, along with some malt sweetness. Medium, flabby body. Finishes bitter with a sour twinge. Not quite my style.

On tap. Pours a cloudy yellowish orange with a white head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has a combination of bitter grapefruit and sweet citrus with an earthy grain backbone. Flavor starts with bitter grapefruit that mellows and allows sweet citrus and a grain backbone to come through.

Pours like grapefruit juice. Smell is underwhelming. Not a strong IPA. If you like grapefruit that has some of the sour cut out of it, you will like this. I like it, but it does not taste like a beer to me.

Draft to taster. Looks decent for a session IPA; a hazy light gold with foamy white head. Smells of grapefruit all the way. Tastes like it smells with a touch of biscuit and a solid mouthfeel. An enjoyable session IPA.
