Just one sip of this Red Hopped Mama conjures up the history lesson we all learned as kids. Everyone knows the story of Captain Shaddock sailing from East India with pummel seeds in tow on his way to the Caribbean to change the face of fruit forever, but Shaddock could have never imagined that his Barbados forbidden fruit would find its way into the beer glass in front of you. From East India to the West Indies, from Texas to Comstock Park, the short legacy of this 300 year old little fruit that could, continues with you ordering up a cold one.

Pours a hazy light orange color. No head at all. Smells a bit like earth and sour. A sour flavor mixed with watery orange juice.

Draught at the Perrin Brewing Co, Comstock Park, MI. Hazy golden color with a small white head. Fruity aroma. The flavor is sourness, mild bitterness, mild hops and some maltiness. Quite OK. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

can - Hazy gold pour, very citrusy aroma. The flavor is moderately bitter and heavy on the grapefruit. Not being much of a grapefruit fan though I enjoy some notes of it in beer, this was heavy on the fruit for me. Itís still a fairly good medium bodied brew.

On tap at Champps Sports Bar. Cloudy yellow, almost no aroma. Nice bite on the taste, with sour grapefruit present. Full body. Ok, not great for me.

12oz can from Anderson in Dublin: gold pour, dingy white head, loose stick. aroma of orange, biscuity. tastes are grapefruit, lemon, acidic, lightly tart wheat (canít tell if itís intentional). bit muddled for an ipa. goes down easy - though canít tell if any of itís on purpose.

Tap at Seva Detroit. Murky orange golden with white head. Orange juice, grapefruit juice, apricot, light sweet malts and a bit of grass but mostly just a lot of juice, and not even in a very hoppy way. Under medium sweet, lighter bitter and light sour. Medium bodied. I wouldnít even call this an IPA but itís great.

Can. Head is initially average sized, frothy, white, mostly diminishing. Body is cloudy light to medium yellow. Aroma is lightly malty (grain), lightly to moderately hoppy (grapefruit), with notes of grapefruit juice, metal shavings, celery. Flavor is moderately sweet, moderately acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, moderately acidic, moderately bitter, slightly unclean. Medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation, lightly alcoholic, metallic. Not a fan of this one, my first experience with this brewery. While the grapefruit isnít overdone aromatically, itís pretty darn sour in the mouth and there are off notes to spoil the fun too. Watery and metallic mouthfeel doesnít help either. Thumbs down.

This is a nice change of pace ipa with a good grapefruit finish. Not overly hopped or too fruity. Very crisp for a hot day.

12 oz can. Pours very hazy orange yellow with a big fluffy white head that retains well and laces the glass.

The aroma is wheat malts and grapefruit.

The flavor is wheat malts and sweet grapefruit juice with a slight bitter finish. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with low carbonation.

Overall, lots of grapefruit but not much hops. Just enough bitterness to counter the sweetness.
