Just one sip of this Red Hopped Mama conjures up the history lesson we all learned as kids. Everyone knows the story of Captain Shaddock sailing from East India with pummel seeds in tow on his way to the Caribbean to change the face of fruit forever, but Shaddock could have never imagined that his Barbados forbidden fruit would find its way into the beer glass in front of you. From East India to the West Indies, from Texas to Comstock Park, the short legacy of this 300 year old little fruit that could, continues with you ordering up a cold one.

12 oz can. Pours very hazy orange yellow with a big fluffy white head that retains well and laces the glass.

The aroma is wheat malts and grapefruit.

The flavor is wheat malts and sweet grapefruit juice with a slight bitter finish. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with low carbonation.

Overall, lots of grapefruit but not much hops. Just enough bitterness to counter the sweetness.

Smells a bit odd, drank from can, muddled hop flavours mixed with unnecessary grapefruit rind astringency. Not a very pleasant texture, would not drink again.

UPDATED: JUN 12, 2016 Foggy orange red color. Mostly grapefruit nose. An off putting grapefruit juice flavor mostly. Pretty quenching.

12 oz. can, consumed on 5-13-16. Hazy, pale brass with a large amount of off-white head. I do get grapefruit in the aroma, but itís subtle. A bit of vomit in smell, unfortunately. Not an awful aroma, but I canít say it smells good. Grapefruit and IPA components are clearer in the flavor than in the aroma. Too much grapefruit in taste, in fact. Light body. Smooth in the palate. Forgettable palate effects but no palate flaws. Boring beer overall with slight offputting elements. Very little to the base beer, and the grapefruit only subtracts. Iím not a fan.

12 oz single can from the Craft Beer Cellar - Fort Collins, dated one month ago. Hazy light orange appearance with a small white head. Aroma of grapefruit pith, light floral hops, pine and earth. Similar flavor, adding moderate citrus hop bitterness with a light grainy, heavy bitter, lingering finish. Light to medium body with a light dry feel. OK.

12 ounce can into pint glass, canned on 2/24/2016. Pours hazy golden orange color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense and fluffy white head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass. Aromas of grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, peach, lemon zest, orange peel, pine, cracker, bread, light honey, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Nice and and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of citrus/tropical/pine hops, grapefruit juice, and moderate pale malt notes; with solid strength. Taste of big grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, peach, lemon zest, orange peel, citrus rind, pine, cracker, bread, light honey, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Good amount of pine/citrus rind/grassy bitterness and light fruit tartness on the finish; with lingering notes of grapefruit, tangerine, peach, pineapple, lemon/orange rind, pine, and herbal/floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a while. Very nice complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/tropical/pine hops, grapefruit juice, and moderate pale malt flavors; with a good malt/bitterness balance; with light hop/grapefruit astringency lingering after the finish. Good amount of dryness from hop/grapefruit bitterness as well. Medium carbonation and light-medium body; with a very smooth, crisp, and sticky/resinous mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with zero warming present after the finish as expected of 5%. Overall this is a very good fruited IPA style. All around good complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/tropical/pine hops, grapefruit juice, and moderate pale malt flavors; and very smooth, crisp, and refreshing to drink; despite having some lingering flavor astringency. A very enjoyable offering.

UPDATED: APR 15, 2016 Aroma is citrus, tart, pine, almost sour, sour grapefruit I guess. Off-putting. Appearance is foggy orange, off white head. Taste is not good. Citrus, wheat, bitter pine, light tartness, Iím picking up some vinegar, way off. Mouthfeel is watery, light to medium body with light carbonation, wheat and sour aftertaste. Overall, this is closer to a Berliner Weisse in aroma and taste...and mouthfeel. Swing and a miss.

On tap at crunchys. Pours cloudy with white lacing. Slight citrus aroma. Not too bitter and thinner body.

Pours a very murky orange-yellow with a foamy white head. Aroma is some citrus, some grapefruit, and light bread malts. Flavor is mostly grapefruit with very little hop character for an IPA. Sweet, with a thin body and no bitterness and not a lot of carbonation. Iím not sure this should be labeled an IPA but a fruit beer. Not really outstanding in either category, though. Not bad to drink, but doesnít do much interesting as an IPA or a fruit beer.
