Gregis (1132), Shawnee, Kansas, USA Oct 24, 2009 Pours a deep brown (almost black) with a thin beige head that quickly collapses. The nose is of ashy dark roast and a touch of chocolate. Light-bodied and slick with a tart/astringent finish. Odd. There is a strong lactose-like sourness over roasted malt and a hint of chocolate. I’m inclined to think this is either infected or it’s the oddest Schwarzbier I’ve ever tried. But given that 2 of the 3 previous raters also got the lactose note, it’s either intended or a quality control issue. dmac (1414), Toms River, New Jersey, USA Oct 15, 2009 12 oz bottle from soonah. Pours a deep dark brown with a smaller foamy off white head.Aroma was well done with roasty malts, sweet chocolate, freeze dried coffee but a slight underlying touch of sour milk. The sour milk aroma really takes off in the flavor and knocks this beer down a bunch. Nothing memorable here but not horrible. jgb9348 (2492), Arlington (Pentagon City), Virginia, USA Oct 14, 2009 Deep dark brown coloured body with a strong brong body when held up to a light with a very thin tan head that shows when poured vigorously. Aroma of roasted malt, figs, pit fruits, caramel and concord grapes with a bit of nice fresh scents. Medium-bodied; Assertive chalky taste with a ton of malt, nuts, caramel and those pit fruits. Aftertaste shows some alcohol, a lot of nuts, a tiny bit of yeast and a lot of nuts tucked in. Overall, not such a bad beer - no smoke or deep flavours, only some pit fruits and roasty malts. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased at Broadway Wine Merchants in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on 31-August-2009 sampled at home in Washington on 14-October-2009. Ughsmash (3978), Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA Oct 1, 2009 Bottled. Poured clear, deep brown with a lovely cap of tan head.. looked great! The aroma picked up toasty coffee, molasses, and black patent maltage accented by a touch of smoke and earth.. nice presentation. The flavor had sticky caramel, molasses, and coffee at the core with some vanilla and chocolate laced throughout.. spicy earth and lactic sourness surrounded.. finished with the milky sugars clashing against the malts. Lighter-bodied with high carbonation on the palate.. scratchy and bitter at the end.. OK feel, but barely. topherh (878), Kearney, Missouri, USA Sep 21, 2009 Bottle pours black with brown edges, beige head. Aroma is dark fruit, light roast, bit of sourness. Flavor is lightly roasted malt, a bit of smoke and hops. Trev (849), Lakeville, Minnesota, USA Sep 18, 2009 pours dark brown/black with a thin tan head.
Aroma is chocolate maltiness with a bit of nuttiness and smoke.
very drinkable if a little thin in the body.
Flavour is chocolatey again, though not overly sweet, some pronounced dark fruitiness in the finish.. tennisjoel (931), Shakopee, Minnesota, USA Sep 16, 2009 Thanks Steve for the bottle of this. Simple beer here, chocolate and dark fruit, with a tinge of smoke. No roast detected which is usually typical for this style. Nothing super interesting, yet highly quaffable. Skyview (3930), Papoose Jct., Minnesota, USA Sep 13, 2009 Sampled during Autumn Brew Review 2009 in Minneapolis, MN as Choc Miners Mishaps Black Lager. From 12-oz bottle pours a clear dark brow colored brew with a thin beige head that quickly dissipates to a thin ring. Aroma of roasted caramel malt, some light chocolate, flowery hops and a touch of dark pitted fruits. Flavor is medium bodied, some carbonation with flavors of roasted dark malt, some flowery hops and a touch of chocolate. Finish is slightly dry with some metallic texture with a roasted malt and flowery hop aftertaste.
