A tribute to our favorite Brewmaster, Greg Matthews, the Velvet Hammer appears as a dark, ruby reddish-brown ale beneath a sheath of protective off-white foam. It is malt-forward with elements of caramel and the sweetness of light brown sugar, balanced nicely by a combination of floral hops and a noticeable alcohol bite. It’s a sturdy brew with a smooth character which belies both an inner strength and a slightly full body, along with a moderate bitterness to round out the taste.

Have had this a few dozen times but yet to rate it, always the go to at Cane Rosso as it comes in a larger glass that at other establishments. It is rather strong and you know it as the alcohol is not hidden like he does with the Wintervention. Smells great, pours a beautiful dark red. Love it. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Sampled at the 2014 Untapped festival in Fort Worth. Pours a hazy amber with a yellowish brown head that lasts throughout the beer. Aroma has sweet grains, a touch of resin, caramel and a bit of cookie. Flavor has sweet grains and resin with a bit of caramel coming through in the finish.

Tap - lightly hazy dark copper - full-bodied with a fairly round and creamy texture in the mouth - flavor is initially sweet, with notes of brown sugar, toffee, a touch of raisin - a fairly strong bitterness arrives late, along with woody hop flavors (cedar, pine) - finish is a little hot, but otherwise a decent offering.

really flavorful. Carmel flavored slighly. Hint of chocholate, not overwhelming at all. Kinda like a perfect amount to make it not taste stouty.

On tap at Oak St. Pub in Denton TX Review from notes: A - Dark reddish brown with ruby hues on the edges, hazy with a small sudsy cap. Good lacing. S - Strong caramel malt, tangy dark fruit, earthy hops, pine mostly. T - Follows the nose with dark caramel malt, fruity alcohol, the fruit is generic and hard to pick out, earthy rugged flavors, pine/herbal hops. Finishes semi-dry with some alcohol and pine. M - Medium full body, medium carbonation, alcohol shows up a bit, sweet semi-dry finish. A malty strong ale the has enough hops to balance it out. Plenty of alcohol showing but works well with all components. Glad I had a chance to try this. Serving type: on-tap 11-10-2013

Tap at LUCK. Pours a clear ruby color with a nice white head. Aroma is sweet, big caramel and more sweet notes. Flavor is dry, sweet with a big tingle over the palate. Dry finish. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

This beer amazes me every time. Great aroma hops. Great bittering and off set by great malty sweetness. I consider this a great alternative to arrogant bastard.
