COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A tribute to our favorite Brewmaster, Greg Matthews, the Velvet Hammer appears as a dark, ruby reddish-brown ale beneath a sheath of protective off-white foam. It is malt-forward with elements of caramel and the sweetness of light brown sugar, balanced nicely by a combination of floral hops and a noticeable alcohol bite. Itís a sturdy brew with a smooth character which belies both an inner strength and a slightly full body, along with a moderate bitterness to round out the taste.

Have had this a few dozen times but yet to rate it, always the go to at Cane Rosso as it comes in a larger glass that at other establishments. It is rather strong and you know it as the alcohol is not hidden like he does with the Wintervention. Smells great, pours a beautiful dark red. Love it. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Tap at Brass Tap, Fort Worth. Pours deep ruby copper, white head. Aroma is lots of caramel, sort of that red ale aroma, with some pine and citrus. Flavor is malty, citrus, kind of a nice caramel malt. Yea, this is a great balance between hops and malt for a hoppy red.

Pours hazy red with a finger of off-white head. Aroma of rye, grapefruit, citrus, light caramel. Taste is medium to rich medicinal bitter with bitter finish. Light bodied with soft carbonation.

Sampled at GABF 2015. Denver. In the tasting glass a red brown with a beige head. Nose of dark ripe fruit. Full body. Flavor is big on the malts and there are floral hops. Bitter finish but not too bitter. Good stuff.

Draft at FS Addison. Dark reddish brown with a thin head. Malty backbone with a hoppy aroma and finish, a little citrus and pine. Nice. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Nice spicy rye aroma. Nice hoppy flavor. On the resiny side. Bitter lingers. Dry. Pours dark red with a lacy head. Thin bodied, which is nice but I donít think particularly stylistically appropriate. This is all right. Deceptively high in abv. Donít like how long the bitter lingers, but do like the spice.

Plano, Tx. - Whiskey Cake Kitchen & Bar - on tap. Dark copper pour, light off-white head. Roasted, nutty aroma. Pomegranate fruitiness, some nutty accents, slight booziness, slight bourbon burn. Slick mouthfeel.

Tap in Dallas at the Rodeo Goat. Pint glass. Deep ruby/copper with some really nice lacing. White persistent head...about 1/4 finger. Aroma has malty and sugary elements. Dark fruit comes through too. Taste has a strong alcohol presence that lingers well into the aftertaste. Some bitterness appears during the middle with a malty backbone. Almost an imperial red feeling to it. First beer of the TX two-step trip. Itís a decent way to kick things off!

Draft. Pours a medium ivory head, with moderate lacing, over a clear, copper Amber (SRM 18) body.....nose is raisin, plum notes, cereal, light pine, resin, balance to the malts.....taste is slightly sweet to start with licorice, anise tones, slight American hop notes with light pine, resin, balance to the malts.....mouth feel, medium body, slight stickiness, alcohol warmth present, carbonation low. Some aspects of the hops are fairly harsh for the style, but the malts correct for this. The overall complexity is quite good. BJCP 7/3/14/4/7

Draft: Poured a dark brown Amber with tan head. Nice underling hops and malt aroma. Taste is hops, toasted malts very balanced and yet hides the 9% well.

From tap at a restaurant. Great spicy nose. Nice deep amber color. Hops are a bit assertive, mask the other flavors. Good spice taste in the back. Creamy mouthfeel. Satisfying overall.
