Bottle at DHVL 2009. First try of the ’green Orval’. Pours out as a regular Orval, nice head, amber color. Taste is really a lot less then a regular Orval. It misses the caracter of the regular one, but it has the same aftertaste. Yo do notice that is is slightly older. Nice, but I prefer a real orval from 2009 though.

On tap at the abbey pub. I tried this together with a glas of Orval. It looks very similar to the usual Orval, slightly creamier head though. Could be due to it being on tap versus the bottled Orval. The smell was yeasty and fruity with apples, also a bit of sourness. The taste seperated the two beers, the petit had a taste of earth, earthcellar, perfume, hops and violet. Light body then Orval, also lower carbonation but smoother mouthfeel. The beers are almost the same but the Petit is milder overall, some tastes that seperate the two. Nice though, I wish I could have this in my local supermarket.

On tap at the abbey cafe during last week’s trip to Belgium. I was surprised by this; maybe they switched this over to tap during the cafe’s renovations. Beautiful place, by the way. Reviewed from notes.
Served in an Orval chalice with Orval written in GREEN on the front with the cafe logo -- instead of the fish -- on the back.
Pours a lightly-hazed moderate golden-amber color with great lacing and a thin cap throughout. The nose brings a bit floral hop character. Very, very fresh. Almost tastes like a fresh-hopped Belgian Pale Ale. Big on the floral character. Seems like Styrian to me, but I’m not expert. Light and crisp body with a dry finish and light bitterness. No noticeable Brett presence. Really delicious.

Light amber, effervescent with a puffy cream head, moderate lacing. Light medicine and dusty yeast, bit of grass and hop in the nose along with some peppery dough. Flavor is dry, dusty, doughy, bit more grain and hop, faint yeast shooting in and out. Creamy from start to finish, this is great stuff, reminiscent of the regular, and while less compelling or refined, it’s uniquely dry and light in its own regard.

Bottle at DHL. Hazy golden color, thick white head. Typical Orval aroma of sourdough and rye bread dough and yeast. Taste has orange peel, coriander, white pepper, raw bread dough. Soft sourness. Nice stuff.

Würziger, aber leichter Geruch. Im Antrunk ist ein würziger Ansatz zu erkennen, der aber leider nicht fortgeführt wird. Man schmeckt die Trappistenzugehörigkeit, leider zu wenig. Leicht herber Abgang.

Bottle, poured into Orval chalice at Ange Gardien in September 2009. Sampled alongside Orval bottled March 11 2009, with a big portion of Orval Cheese.
Pours slightly lighter and less hazy than Orval, topped with a medium sized tan head. Aroma of caramel, light hops, and wild yeast; essentially typical Orval aroma but less intense. Dry on the palate, with brett, earthy notes, hops, and faint hints of caramel. Funky yeast lingers on the palate for a bit. Less intense than its brethren, but easy to drink and quite enjoyable, especially in these surroundings.

2008 Vintage; Sampled July 2010 at De Heeren van Liedekercke
The beer pours with a long lasting, creamy textured, pale tan colored head that is larger bubbled than a regular Orval. The beer is brilliantly clear and shows a copper hue in the Orval glass. This smells fairly hoppy smelling up front, but has a nice pale and lightly toasted malt character that follows this up. A deeper reflection of the nose reveals some musky notes, a touch of phenolics and some light plastic notes that clearly are derived from the Brettanomyces influence.
The beer feels very fizzy and bubbly as it hits my mouth, much of this is because this is on the warm side, and the finish has a huge bitterness to it, especially considering the light body and fizzy texture. A touch of grassy pale malt character is noticeable up front and the beer finishes with a nice biscuit like note. This is really quite hoppy too with a solid herbal character, the really nicely biting bitterness and even a touch of lemon-zest character being noticeable. I am quite enjoying how light bodied and refreshing this is.
In the end it is the refreshing balance that this beer achieves that makes this enjoyable; it has a nice mix of herbal hop character, a balanced bitter hop character, mixing with the pale malt character and all tied together by the creamy, yet fizzy texture.

THank you Joe T. for sharing this bottle this eve...no aroma blows up to mineral/pop-rocks cherry Orval aroma on a nearly-gilded aroma pour with off-white head...flavor of integrated best champagne components with mineral and cherry richness that dries out (and belies low alcohol).

12oz bottle, courtesy of joet (via Phil_L). Thanks, Joe! Pours a murky, orange-amber color; creamy, fine-bubbled, off-white head with solid retention and lacing. Hugely yeasty, minerally, musty aroma; nicely dry, slightly tart, loads of horseblanket and must; really funky nose. Medium-light body; modest carbonation; lightly creamy; slightly watery on the palate, honestly; lively, complex, musty yeast character is the most dominant note throughout: horseblanket, light citrus, and huge amounts of minerals; very dry core, and dry almost to the point of chalkiness or light astringency; tasty stuff, especially for how small-bodied this is; lovely, musty, funky stuff; a great, clear example of "horseblanket" without the intense funkiness or acidity; very dry core; lovely stuff. Lasting mineral-focused finish: dough, toastiness, lightly bitter; very hard water.
