3.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
From the cafe near the abbey. Clear copper color. Effervescent. Decent head although not nearly as large as the head on regular Orval given similar pours. Very mild aroma. A touch of hops in the nose. No real discernible brett aroma--I’m not sure if they use brett in the Petite Orval. Small malt aroma and flavor. Very nice subdued beer. Good medium mouthfeel. I could drink this beer all night. Remarkable flavor and complexity for such a small beer.

3.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 13/20
The ’green’ Orval, a remnant of the second World War and now the monks’ own "refter beer" - in other words, the beer for daily use. Limited production and very hard to find, I had it from a bottle once and a second time from tap at L’Ange Gardien. Loose, off-white head, colour a deep amber, the same as the ’big’ Orval but a tad paler. Aroma and taste are basically the same, but everything in a more subdued, diluted way, less outspoken, as if you would pour mineral water into an ordinary Orval. A bit sweeter perhaps too, but the aftertaste shows the same dry-hopped effect, long and bitter. Bit thin mouthfeel due to the low ABV. Not sure if this is a different recipe, as the monks claim; to me, this did seem like an Orval diluted with water. But still, it remains an Orval!

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Unlabeled bottle courtesy of kraddel. Nice color, excellent head retention and lacing. Subtle malts, plenty of hops (though a bit aged), mildly herbal, dry as a bone. A bit one-dimensional, not really my thing.

2.3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 8/20

Pours cloudy amber with airy but stable off-white head. Clear aroma of fruit, malt ans flowers. Bitter, hoppy flavour, with notes of citrus, malt and yeast. Bitter and estery aftertaste with acidic notes. A very nice one.

4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
On tap, 33cL. @Ange_Gardien, near the Abbaye. I drank this beer before : light, sour, disappointing. But NOW that’s something totally different ! The receipe changed (the waiter confirmed me this!) Color is brown on top, orange at the bottom. Creamy off-white head with a good persistence. Beautiful ! Poured chilled. Fruity aroma (citrus), herbs, a bit acid and smoky. Delicious. First sweet then medium dry bitter with a sharp sour note. Medium body, thin texture, fizzy carbonation, dry finish with a sour note. Overall, the taste triangle of Orval is definitely there (sweet/bitter/sour) with a delicious fruity/herbal aroma. This Petit Orval looks more like her famous big sister : more fruity, less complex in the taste.

2.5 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20
Bottle at ’t Antwaerps Bierhuyske, pours a clear golden orange with a small white head. Aroma is pretty funky, with typical Orval yeast, though a lot more restrained. Flavour is very much the same, with a very feet-like funk to it. Since regular Orval isn’t really my thing, this is even less thrilling to me sadly. Not my thing.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle (330 ml) @ De Heeren van Liedekercke. Vintage 2008. Clear bright golden with a medium creamy off-white head and good lacing. Aroma is of brettanomyces, herbal and floral presence, mineral notes and a fruity touch. Taste is mild, but elegant with leathery brettanomyces, herbal/floral notes, a light but efficient malt backbone, light mineral presence and a mild lingering bitter finish. Light body. A tad watery. Medium carbonation. Dry finish. Very tasting and super refreshing/quenching. I would drink a ton of this during summer.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle at DHVL, 2008 vintage. Clear gold pour with lacy, creamy white head. Very aromatic despite it’s diluted nature, earth, brett, leather. Taste is a bit watery, but still has a really tasty earthy notes, quite grainy with a long bitter finish. Palate is light and bone dry, very refreshing. Good stuff.

4.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Opaque golden orange yellow with thick lasting, lacing off-white foam head. Aroma is mixture of hop and sweet fruity tones. Taste is perfect, understand why the monks want this for themselves. Bitter, but not too much. Very nice beer. (L’Ange Gardien 201404)
