Aged? Many beers have a long maturation, but this one has only 24-36 months in oak barrels. Pale? This beer has an old gold to bronze color, rather than the burgundy more common in the breweries of West Flanders. This is the ‘mother beer,’ used in various quantities to blend with the other Petrus beers, and to give them their unique and very distinctive taste. This mother beer is rather sour with a bite like the best Brut Champagnes. A connoisseur’s delight! The only one of its kind on the U.S. market.

Not bold enough for how sour it truly is. Kind of bland and not enough bite also. Extremely sour also ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle shared poured a medium yellow with white head. Initial aroma is oak mild horse blanket mild to medium hop and some Brett. The flavor I thought was really good nice oaky flavor blended with Brett and Belgian yeast and hops quite tasty.

Light, light color, strong tangy, sour smell. Tastes very tart, hint of apple, yet finishes very smooth for a sour. Very quaffable. Great.

UPDATED: APR 10, 2016 Bottle to tulip. Hazy golden yellow with moderate white head and little to no lacing. Aroma of apples, oak, and cider vinegar. Flavor of raw crab apples, apple cider vinegar, oak, and white grapes. Tart up front with a dry finish. Nice.

33cl bottle bought in Brugge, this is a beer I have somehow missed when buying in Belgium over the years. Broached at home on 27th Dec 2015 and poured slowly into a Westmalle chalice, no sediment left the bottle, so I got a clear light golden coloured beer with a thin white head that sadly fell away to a wisp and collar far too quickly. Sour, turned, sort of aroma and taste, certainly different to any other ’Petrus’ beers I have had, even if this is supposed to be the ’Mother Beer’. Glad I found and tried this, but I will not be seeking it out again. Just not my scene at all, I am sure this is going to give me belly ache: scored objectively.

Smell of vinegar, yeast, rancid fruit, come in light yellow with white crown, Taste of sour vinegar.... my apple vinegar tastes better than this. I’m a fan of Belgium beer but not this.

Appearance: A perfectly clear yellow body with a ring of white foam. Aroma: funk, bandaid, yeast, earthiness and fruitiness. Taste: a strong sourness, like the acid of preserved vegetables. some fruitytones but again a harsh hefty bitterness on the finish with a puckering aftertaste. Lively carbonation and fairly light mouthfeel. Sorry but didn’t like it to harsh tastes clashing in, in non good way. (backlog rating)
