Aged? Many beers have a long maturation, but this one has only 24-36 months in oak barrels. Pale? This beer has an old gold to bronze color, rather than the burgundy more common in the breweries of West Flanders. This is the ‘mother beer,’ used in various quantities to blend with the other Petrus beers, and to give them their unique and very distinctive taste. This mother beer is rather sour with a bite like the best Brut Champagnes. A connoisseur’s delight! The only one of its kind on the U.S. market.

A very sweet sour. Straw colored with finger’s worth of head. Definite sour and funk aroma. Taste packs a big sweetness with the lemony tart flavor. Almost a lemonhead candy taste. Moderate carbonation makes it nice to sip slowly.

This is a nice sour ale, sort of strikes me as a less hoppy Orval or something w/ a very nice wild yeast character to it. This pours pretty clear in the glass, clearer than most brewery’s IPAs these days, w/ a large, foamy and quickly dissipating head. The nose is really nice. I’m getting a lot of fruit up front which wanes to a warmer, more earthy smell as you dig in deeper. This has a nice lemon juicy tartness that’s not at all overbearing, esp. w/ just a touch of balancing sweetness. It’s medium bodied w/ a crisp bite of carbonation. There is a pretty assertive bitterness in the finish that I can’t tell if it’s from hops or perhaps tannin from the barrel aging but it is just a touch too much in my opinion. Otherwise, this is a nice, complex and drinkable wild ale. I am going to have no problem finishing off this 750.

Oaky acidic sour aroma, some barnyard funk, leather, dust, cherry like sourness Pours a pale golden color with small disappearing white head Oaky, leathery, very acidic sour, dusty, light spice flavor. Light bodied, medium high co2, lingering oaky sourness. Interesting sour. Definitely meant to be blended. Has an interesting character to lend to sweeter beers. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Poured from bottle into a chalice glass Appearance – The beer pours a clear golden color with a nice thick white head of two finger height. The head has a great level of retention, very slowly fading over time to leave tons of foamy lace on the sides of the glass. Smell – The aroma is quite strong of a sour apple cider vinegar smell which is mixed with a tart green apple like sourness. Along with these sour smells comes some aromas of an oaked smell and a little bit of a white wine vinegar and a little bit of lighter cracker aroma. Taste – The taste begins with a little bit of a cracker taste mixed with a good showing of a sour apple cider vinegar taste. Other fruit tastes of sweet apple, peach, and pear are present upfront. These are light overall and fade over time as the taste advances. All the while, the sour flavors get stronger and stronger with the apple cider vinegar getting stronger and being joined by a tart green apple flavor and some other vinegar flavors of a white wine vinegar nature. The oak while not very present upfront makes it’s showing at the end of the taste, with it growing to a rather decent potency and actually complimenting the sour flavors rather well. With the loss of the sweet fruit and the advancement of the sour vinegar and green apple flavors, one is left with a rather drier and moderately puckering sour flavor to linger on the tongue. Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is quite thin with a carbonation that is rather moderate. For the sour and tart flavors of the brew, with the lighter flavors and nature of the beer, the lighter style of the carbonation and feel are quite nice overall and help make a more approachable beer, all the while still being a very slow drinker in light of the sour nature and abv. Overall – A fairly nice sour overall with a drier and moderate sourness being complemented by a lighter fruit and decent showing of oak. While not the best sour out there it certainly one to try if you find it, especially if you like a little oak flavor.

0,33 l bottle from drankgigant.nl, best before 23/1/2016. Clear, pale golden yellow with a medium large, foamy, almost stable, white head. Intense, sourish-fruity and slightly funky aroma of orange, cinnamon, white wine, gherkin, gooseberry and sauerkraut. Sour, fruity taste of citrus, white wine and gooseberry with hints of nutmeg, followed by a long, sour, tart finish. Thin body, very astringent and spritzy mouthfeel, soft to average carbonation. Very complex on the nose, a bit more one-dimensional on the tongue but still very tasty and refreshing. Thanks Michael Jackson for this beer!

Bumbling about in the liquor store, cursing the fact that I’d forgotten my glasses while knowing that my long, sweaty bike ride would end up with a few new beer purchases, I (barely) saw this brew on a shelf. Knowing that I have never had it, I bought one. Did I know that it was a sour? Nope. Supposedly, I’ve given up on them, not especially liking the style. This ale has a fruity aroma and tastes like sour cherries. It’s not sweet, not bitter, well carbonated and has a solid ABV. Not my idea of something I’d like to spend an afternoon drinking, but more than acceptable after that bike ride. Go Belgians!

Bottle. Golden with white head. Aroma of musty funk, earth, lemon. Taste of lemon, funk, earth. Super sharp and acidic. Delish
