Pours clear golden into the snifter glass with a very tiny head. The head quickly faded to leave a few carbonation bubbles at the top. The scent was very sour with hints of vinegar, sugar and malt. A very sour, carbonated bite up front with an acidic finish. Nice flavors of oak to compliment the sourness. An enjoyable sour ale.

March 17th, 2013 - I’m shocked the Petrus isn’t already part of my beer drinking CV. That particular hobby was seeded by Belgian brews, long before I migrated to the slightly more affordable and the more volatile local beer market. The Petrus pours a mostly clear golden brew, and a perfume of sharp, peppery white wine billows from the top, reminding me of the Flemish sour ales I enjoyed with more frequency years ago. The taste is acidic, true, but also tangy, like a white wine version of a Flemish, and even resembles a tangy Chardonnay. The tartness lasts on the tongue a line time, encouraging slow, small sips, and a long evening of tongue sucking following each taste. This is a great drink, and needs to be in my beer cabinet with more frequency than it has so far.

UPDATED: OCT 27, 2014 Tasted this fresh at one of the Bierpassieweekends, which happened to be attended by the late Michael Jackson, many years ago and I liked it a lot. Since I had a suspicion that a strong, sour ale with bottle refermentation would age quite well, I bought one a while after that and decided to keep it in my cellar. That was ten years ago, and now it is time to finally open it and see what happened. Pours a warm orange blonde colour with very slightly brownish hue, misty but not completely clouded and no dead yeast deposit; head formation is limited as expected from such an old beer, but with some forcing a light greyish white, loosely structured white head forms, consisting of mostly large bubbles but still rather dense and in all, still surprisingly stable (even till the end) with still - equally surprisingly - a good deal of fizz underneath. Aroma is unmistakable of old beer and oxidized, with some maderization - I almost have the impression I’m having a beer in the Kulminator. And like the best of their collection, this old beer shows a very agreeable, rustic and complex bouquet, with impressions of tomato concentrate, passion fruit, pickled sweet gherkins, orange, lots of redcurrant, mango, sour yoghurt, very old sherry and madera, earth, dust, bourbon, barnyard, moist cellar, artisanal honey, wine vinegar, limoncello, strawberry jam, cooked rhubarb, broth. Taste kicks off with a sour sweetness like an old ’oud bruin’, sour lemon candy, orange, dried apricot, raw rhubarb; the acidity dries the mouth but in a crisp and refreshing way, even after so many years. In the middle a slick caramelly malt sweetness appears but still dominated by the tartness and strong estery fruitiness from the onset, with an explicitly sherry-like effect; carbonation is still there and lightens the palate. Finishes in a dry tartness but the initial estery-fruity sweetness lasts equally long; a faint woody touch appears as well as a hint of warming alcohol, which is otherwise perfectly camouflaged. No hop bitterness to speak of, but this is not the case in the fresh beer either - and not intended in most sour ales anyway, so I didn’t expect any. My suspicion proved right: though obviously showing the signs of old age, this sour one is still very refreshing, still looks fine and has lost none of its youthful charm. In fact, the ageing only added to its complexity. I would not recommend keeping this any longer than I did, but if you have the patience to wait, a vintage tasting of different ages will surely be quite interesting - that is, if you are accustomed to both old beer and sour beer, of course. This is still the greatest Bavik product I ever tasted - it makes me even wonder why the rest of their range is so average. But like many Belgian brewers, they keep the best for export to the States. Which is a loss for us beer afficionados here on the home market!

33 cl bottle at home. Golden in colour, small head that disappears very quickly. Aroma is musty and lemony, pungent, almost acrid. Taste is tart, sherbet, musty lemon, sour and sharp with slight sweetness. Lively on the tongue despite low carbonation. Slight mouthfeel, the finish is sweet and sour. Very good overall, it reminds me of acid drop sweets we used to eat as kids.

Bottle from de Bierschuur in Poppel. The beer has a yellow/pale color and a nice large white head, with a lot of bubbles. In the aroma wood notes, citrus, notes, acids and a little sherry. The taste is very astringent and vinous, dry, sour apple crisp, a real brut the brut. There is a reference to sherry and fruits. At the end is the classic acidity and dryness of the beerstyle recognizable. Not my thing this beer, but some things were good about this beer.

330ml bottle from a beer shop in Kaunas, clear gold colour, small frothy mostly lasting white head, fair lacing. Aroma of grapes, leather and a bit of barnyard, leaves, vanilla and grain. Taste is initially slightly sweet and acidic, turning into a longish sour and slightly bitter finish with a hint of alcohol. Full body, oily texture, lively carbonation. A fairly new style to me but far from unpleasant and albeit an unfamiliar mixture, it seems fairly well thought of.

Sample at ölrepublikens surölsfestival. Half clear yellow with small head. Smell is sour and funky with stables and basement aromas, barnyard and wet leaves. Taste is sour and dry with light sweetness. "Clean" sour taste, with less funk and stables than a lambic.
