JorisPPattyn (4500), Antwerpen, Belgium Mar 29, 2003 AT LAST!! This beer, made by Bavik to blend with younger dark beer, for obtaining the "P. oud bruin", or "P. Oak aged dark" in the USA, is as such only obtainable in the USA. In Belgium the brewery refuses to recognise its existence; breweries' representants not knowing about it, or claiming not to... Thanks to a friendly American visitor, here I go. Colour: dark golden-yellow, dusty-hazy. Slight, but seen the acids quite stable white head. Nose: vineous, woody, lactic & acetic acid. Then lemony, green apples. Taste: Beautifully aged. The wood is very discernible. Mellow acids - acetic acid kept below recognition treshold. Hints of sweetness from malt or unfermentables. WOW - this epitomizes the 'Oud bruin' style. Mouthfeel : there is acid-burn, no mistake. The beer is far from empty, a firm underbuild by malt presents itself. Aftertaste: long wood notes. The sweet underbuild gains strenght given some time. Overall: HELL! I couldn't get enough of this beer, were it available here. As it stands, it is a crying shame. It's like making Romanée-Conti unavailable in France!
malrubius (455), USA Oct 3, 2008 11.2 ounce bottle in Duvel glass. Golden orange with lasting flat head and lace. Funky oaky fruity aroma. Funky melon sweet tartness with funky backbone and surprisingly dry finish. Medium body and medium carbo. Fairly complex and very refreshing, yet still with an assertive challenging funk. Nice. LilBeerDoctor (633), East Setauket, New York, USA Sep 28, 2008 Bottled sampled on 09/26/08 at Night of the Funk. Pours a cloudy golden yellow with a small white head. Aroma of wheat, yeast, and citrus. Flavor of slight sweetness and tartness with a touch of hops but still somewhat indescript. Almost Berliner Weisse like with the tart wheaty notes. Pretty decent beer. fredandboboflo (625), East Setauket, New York, USA Sep 28, 2008 Bottle from 08 Night of the Funk. Aroma of very fleshy orange. Flavor quite acidic, oaky, citric. Berliner-Weisse-like. Uber quaffable. trevor211 (107), Seattle, Washington, USA Sep 27, 2008 Pours a honey amber with a slight cloud, and a small head that dissipates. Aroma of granny smith spiced apple cider and grapefruit juice - very tart and fruity. Very tasty, and incredibly refreshing - just the right amount of tartness with a bit of sweetness to counter it. Tart apples - with a definite holiday spice note (like spiced apple cider). Very nice. luttonm (49), Seattle, Washington, USA Sep 27, 2008 330ml from Bottleworks. Lacy, soapy white head. Clean golden color, very light. Sour fruit and golden raisin nose. Sprightly carbonation with a rush of flavor... grapefruit, lemon, citrus. Distinctly tart, more dry and dramatic than something like Duchess. Wonderful
