Petrus Aged Red is constructed from a base of Double Brown Ale. 15% Petrus Aged Pale is added to provide a dry character to the brew and give it a slight sour essence. Finally the brewer adds fresh cherries, which are evident in the rich thick head. Petrus Aged Red is a perfect blend of sweet and sour with a cherry undertone which makes this brew remarkably drinkable at 8.5% ABV.

Bottle (11.2 fl.oz). Clear dark red-brown with a medium pink-white head that stabilises to a firm film. Nose offers plenty of fresh cherries with background marzipan, candy floss and faint red wine vinegary notes. Taste is candied cherry sweetness with those subtle sour notes at coming through mid palate before a sweet finish. ABV is well hidden. Medium bodied with a soft carbonation. Needs more sourness for me - blend it with Petrus Aged Pale to achieve this.

Part of the Petrus Belgian Sour Power 6-Pack - $22.99 at Bullock’s Wine & Spirits in Marietta, Georgia. Appearance: Pours a deep, dark reddish-brown body with a tallish cap of froth, khaki-hued but hinting a little bit of pink to it. Smell: Sweet, tart black cherry presence layered in syrups. Taste: A sweet taste of dark syrup, a light toasty note, a touch of faint chocolate. A large candied black cherry presence and a striking, somewhat cloying sweetness, leading me to wonder if it’s been artificially sweetened. Starts to become reminiscent of those Luden’s cough drops I recall from my childhood. Altogether minimal sourness. Remains tart and still rather sweet on the finish. Mouthfeel: Medium-light body. Lightly carbonated. Overall: So-so and so-so sweet!

Bottle from Terre de Boissons Calais and drunk at home. Belgian Rating 1000. One of my favourite styles. Really amazing I got to 1000 Belgian beers. Only behind England and USA. Such a small country yet produces so many great beers and most of my true favourites are from Belgium. Clear very deep red. Lasting beige head. Some sweetish cherry aroma. Touch of almond. It’s not exactly sour, but compared with some of the sweet beers I’ve had, it’s more rounded. It’s extremely drinkable. It almost sums up Belgium. It’s a bit weird, but it is so drinkable and likeable. They make beers that make me want to drink them. I love Belgium. Attractive cherries and other red fruits. Some sweetness. Some dryness on the finish. It’s utterly drinkable and I’m pleased I picked it as my 1000th Belgian beer.

Murky deep red - amber beer, good pale tan head. Nice maraschino cherry nose. Palate is light, semi dry and mildly crisp. The malt base is mildly sweet with a touch of cream. Great cherry - strong but mellow, no acid. Maraschino and black cherry in here. Slight bitterness in the finish. Nice one.

Bottle with expiry date 02.2017. Dark brown colour, minimal head. Aroma is quite much vanilla and cherry, a bit of dry red wine. Alcohol well hidden. Lightly sour, light sweetness. Medium carbonation. Good, although could be less sweet.
