COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Petrus Aged Red is constructed from a base of Double Brown Ale. 15% Petrus Aged Pale is added to provide a dry character to the brew and give it a slight sour essence. Finally the brewer adds fresh cherries, which are evident in the rich thick head. Petrus Aged Red is a perfect blend of sweet and sour with a cherry undertone which makes this brew remarkably drinkable at 8.5% ABV.

More sweet than a typical Flemish brown or red and the cherry sweetness overpowers the aged pale base. Very much a lightly sour fruit beer. Slight oaky taste, but pretty much this is all lightly sour cherry.

2015 BJCP Category: 29A Fruit Beer (base style: 23C Oud Bruin)

AROMA: Authentic cherry puree, very sweet like a pie or a soda. Sourness is evident and complements the cherries well. No distinct base brew aromas, though. 10/12

APPEARANCE: Beautiful red wine-like shade of deep ruby; clear. Small, off white foam; some lacing. 3/3

FLAVOR: Cherry throughout. Slightly tart up front, but grows richer throughout the swig. Gentle sour bite at first, but fades. Fruit tastes authentic like pie (doesn’t taste like cough medicine). Some oak and vanilla character in the background. Simple, but tasty. 17/20

MOUTHFEEL: Medium body; low CO2 with a noticeable viscosity. Lingering cherry flavor. Alcohol warmth is moderate but not distracting. 4/5

OVERALL IMPRESSION: Authentic sweet cherry taste is impressive, as is the blending of the base brews. Wish it was more sour, though. 9/10

TOTAL SCORE: 43/50

Just the one! Firstly tasted this Petrus, I was just amazed! Starting from an invigorating, saturated, strong aroma, which turns to smell like a cherry blossom, but nothing near to Eau de Cologne, it comes to a full-bodied, strong, unforgettable taste. I thought it tasted more like Port wein, than beer. The only drawback is a slightly increased sourness, not covered by nice cherry sweetness. But, from all the other sides it’s close to be perfect! And, of course, it leaves behind all the kriek lambics just piece of cake. A cherry cake!

Aroma is nice but it goes downhill from there. Sweet cherries and a little funk on the nose. Pours a murky dark brown with a hue of red. Head a tan/brown that fizzles quickly. Cloying and heavy on the alcohol. Leaves a heavy feeling on my palate after going down. Couldn’t finish this.

Enyhén savanykás, erősen meggyes ízvilág, a maga jellegzetes fanyarságával, de erős, ám sajnos kellemetlen keserűsséggel, amit valószínűleg a fahordós érlelés során szerzett be. E miatt sajna nekem nem jött be. A háttérben némi karamellt érezni. Utóíze enyhe komlós keserűsség, ami gyorsan lecseng, és gyenge meggyes íz, ami viszont sokáig megmarad. Közepesen testes sör, a 8,5 százalékot alig érezni. A színe viszont egyszerűen gyönyörű.

Dark cherry brown in the glass. Nose is sweet sweet cherry. Palate is almost cloying, sticky on the lips, full of dark cherry juice. Little hint of a sour in there somewhere, but hard to find. Abv is well hidden.

Deep vanilla cherry candy notes. Deep brown with a slightly persistent light foam. Sweet and sour with notes of vanilla oak and cherry. Medium light bodied with high carbonation and a slightly sweet finish. Quite good a a wine replacement.
