COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Dark ruby red – red as wine. The style is also called the Burgundy of Flanders, and is a very typical and common beer in West Flanders
Created by a secret blend of the aged and sour ‘mother beer’ with fresh brewed sweeter beer, this beer produces a sour-sweet balance, set off by the underlying bitterness of the hops. A discovery! The best in its style! Light in alcohol, exciting complex flavors and tastes come to the forefront.
Although serving cold is recommended, taking time to drink it will release more aromas towards the end of your glass.

Sweet and sour aroma, malty with notes of caramel, but also some soy or vinegar tang. Fruity with some spice - bitter orange peels and cloves. Dark brown-red clear with light tan foamy lacing head. Medium-thick watery body with light-medium carbonation. Tangy and light malty sweet start. Fruity but muted. Medium acidity and papery, almost stale hops. Finish is light acidic and dull. After has some hops and light bitterness. Overall, kind of weak.

UPDATED: DEC 10, 2004 Bottle bought in Belgium. 250ml, served in a Petrus glass. Average easy drinking old brown, slightly sour, fairly sweet. I guess its fairly similar to others.

Brown beer with nice red shine and with fluffy ivory colored head. Good complex smell with some freshness. This beer has a smooth mouthfeel with a nice touch of fine malts, touch of cinnamon, chocolat and sirop de liège = (Pearsirop). This fine beer has a good balance and a fine freshness in the end.

A delicious FSA - mine was pretty old and I could not dislodge the yeast no matter how hard I tried - therefore, this was a little thinner than it might be, and a tad less flavorful perhaps. Rich grape and tannins, lovely. Diminished nose or grapeskin and dark cherry.

Bought in a "gift pack"...3 Petrus brews plus trappiste tulip glass...pour reveals a slightly cloudy deep red-brown...aromas are articulated...cherry-grape-raisin and a slight alcohol wisp...Starts creamy right off..the body is remarkably clean (not viscous) for such a strong smelling/ tasting ale..it runs the gamut...grapes, cherries, raisins..some toffee and all in balance with this incredible souring that is not overly pronounced...not sweet not sour...lovely fruit tastes and a great finish of sweet/sour fruits with a nice smoky oak finish.., a nice specialty drink from Belgium.

07.03.04 11.2oz bottle. Pours a pretty, deep reddish teakwood color with a even effervesence; it’s a very attractive beer. Lots of bits. Aromas are sour cherry, tons of malty sweetness is anticipated. The flavor is lighter than I expected, crisp, refreshing actually. The fruitiness of the aroma falls flat in the flavor, but there is a more complex, subtle wine quality that emerges. Not as acidic as I thought it would be, finishes tart like a sourball candy. Nice, but not exceptional...I just don’t know enough to know if it’s the beer or the style that doesn’t impress me.

UPDATED: DEC 10, 2008 [bottle - Great European Beerfest 8, Sharp Edge Tavern - East Liberty, PA] The first Flemish Sour Ale I’ve ever had. Poured a rich brown color with not much of a head. Sweet and slightly sour aroma, lots of malt with some apples and other citrus mixed with earthy notes. Kind of cidery in the taste, apples mixed with malts and a semi-sour sensation that gives a smooth yet rather tart finish.

Sour apple, caramel, cinnamon. Brown coloration, thin dissapating head. Decent brew, nothing standing out though.

Pours a deep hazy brown with minimal slight off-white head. aromas of straw, light citrus, wood, apples and honey. Flavors aren’t as dry on the palate as most of the sour ales i’ve had. Apples, spice and pineapple dominate the palate as the flavor lingers on the palate. A light to medium bodied brew that would pair well with a good hearty meaty meal.. Nice oaky finish..
