3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 FreshHawk (596) - Iowa City, Iowa, USA - MAR 15, 2010
Bottle.
A - Deep redish brown with a good sized beige head. Retention is decent and has pretty good lacing.
S - Sour dark fruits (a lot of it cherry and grape like). Also a decent amount of malt sweetness. These together give it kind of a sweetened tart/sour smell with tart/sour winning. Also slight oaky smell.
T - Follows the smell a lot. Again sour/tart flavors come predominately from dark cherry and grape, and are edging out the sweetness from the malt. The tart/sour is the feature but the malt comes in slightly after to keep it in check. I would describe it as starting off more vinegar like then the malt comes in and it is more tart juice like. Throughout there is an oaky aspect to the beer, but it never fully develops or is prominent; rather it is more of a persistent subtle background flavor. All together, it seems a little watery though.
M - Somewhere between medium and light body and with a decent amount of carbonation. Crisp taste.
D - Decent, the sour/tartness isn’t too overpowering and the body is good. Not exactly the most refreshing beer to drink and much better suited for sipping. Wouldn’t drink too many in one sitting, but I could see myself drinking more in the future.
Notes: Pretty good as far as balancing the tartness. If you want a lot of oakiness, there are probably better choices, it’s always there but never outstanding. I liked this, it just seemed a little watered down flavor wise.
3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 j12601 (4171) - Poughkeepsie, New York, USA - MAR 7, 2010
Bottle. Pours a lightly hazy ruby hued caramel brown with a thick beige head. Light grainy hops, a bit of wood, old malt, a touch cardboard like, and something faintly acidic on the back end. Medium bodied, a bit of cigarettes, some spicy malt, no real sourness to speak of. Crisp acidity on the finish, but more of that grainy cheap lager flavor lingering over. Odd, and while I wasn’t expecting to be blown away, I was expecting a good oude bruin and didn’t get that.
