UPDATED: APR 21, 2013 UPDATE (2013-02-27): Please be cautious as there seems to be some wild bottle variations. Some of the bottles from my case tasted like skunky mushrooms (not good) while others were much less problematic with an enjoyable sour. I’m taking down my rating from 3.4 to 2.7 only to emphasize that.

Pours reddish brown with a nice layer of white foam that leaves pretty lacing patterns. Nose is pretty tame with light balsamic notes and maybe a little cherry. Mouthfeel is thinner than expected but at least carbonation is just right so it doesn’t enhance that perception. It ends up bone dry which I appreciate. Overall a light and refreshing drink. Not bad at all, just not up there. Oh and I forgot to mention, this is not sour to me. Only the tinyest sour shows up mid-palate.

Classic ’oud bruin’ matured in oak barrels for 24 months. Deep copper brown colour under a thinnish, pale beige head. Aroma dominated by sour fruits (redcurrant, lemon hint, starfruit), a bit vinegary, woody touch but in all, less complex than e.g. Rodenbach. Same for the taste: passion fruit, red berries, wine vinegar sourishness, candi sugar, sweet caramelly malts and some wood hints in the finish. I think Bavik would please beer afficionados with a fully ’old’ or more authentic edition, like Rodenbach does with their Vintage series. For now: quite okay as an honest and accessible introduction to this underrated and disappearing beer tradition.

Shared at the BFD Christmas Party, thanks to who ever brought it. Tart fruit and light brown sugar light vanilla and earthy woodiness. Great brew, I’m surprised I haven’t rated this before.

Carmel head with dark mahogany color. Slightly flowery and sour aroma with complimenting sour/tart flavors, nice acidity and malty finish with little aftertaste. Easy refreshing beer.

Bottle split with wife, pours brown ruby, some what translucent. Typical Belgian nose with some cherry. Taste is pure cherry cough syrup, light sour. Body is watery but syrupy at the same time.

bottle. Mahogany with two finger head. Light cherry tartness, but not really sour. I’m very underwhelmed with the amount of flavor here -- what’s here is fine, but tastes almost like it’s been watered down significantly.

75 cl. bottle poured in to a Snifter. Dark brown colour with a reddish tinge. Big, fluffy lightly tanned head. Light sourish aroma with oak, caramel malts, tart apples, cherries and other berries. Discrete herbal and citrus hops. Taste is lightly sour. Light to medium body with a creamy texture and a lively carbonation. Finishes dry with a tart, fruity note, light berries and wood. This Oud Bruin is more subtle than e.g. Rodenbach or the Duchesse, but has a nice, refreshing character.
