machfive55 (45), Columbia, Pennsylvania, USA Jun 17, 2008 Poured from a 12 oz bottle and was a nice dark brown color, not at all hazy. There was a good carbonation, but no head on the beer, not sure if that is common for sour ales, possibly because I used a pilsner glass instead of a snifter.
There was a pleasing aroma, but it was nothing exciting. Mostly malty, sweet, fruity with maybe some hints of cherries.
The flavor was outstanding, just wonderful and complex. There was a very nice well rounded sourness with hints of cherry and chocolate, that blended well with a very subtle hop presence. There were times when the bitterness stood out more than others, mostly as the beer warmed toward the middle of the glass. The beer started out very mellow and balanced, moved toward bitter then finished out sweet. I even went back to the bottle and finished the dregs.
The beer feels comfortable in my mouth like it should be there. The alcohol is barely present, which at 5.5% is deceiving.
What an awesome beer, I’ll definately come back to this beer again. I haven’t had too many sour ales, but this is an excellent beer. I think this would make an awesome beer for anyone looking to get more into sour ales...a starter beer.
DuffMan (1939), Calgary, Alberta, Canada Aug 24, 2008 Hazy copper brown, moderate white head. Sour aroma with sugary undertones. Sweet malt with caramel becoming evident as one’s palate adjusts to the dominant tartness and acidity. Quite refreshing. rustychiles (435), Mesa, Arizona, USA Aug 2, 2008 Pours a nice brown with a small off white head. Aroma of fruits, wood, malt, sourness. Flavor is sour fruits, with a sweetness to balance it out. Pretty decent brew. legion242 (1520), Richardson, Texas, USA Aug 1, 2008 First sip of sour and then the sourness becomes quaffable to a degree that I found surprising. kmweaver (2010), Takoma Park, Maryland, USA Jul 30, 2008 11.2oz bottle. Pours a dark, slightly oily cherry-cola color; light tan head with patchy retention and lacing. Mildly tart and overripe red fruits (strawberries, cherries), honey, apples, and cereal in the aroma; not a ton of tartness or depth, but reasonably clear nose. Relaxed carbonation. Medium mouthfeel: slight acidity, very mildly tart (cherries, watery strawberries); some oak toastiness and honey are present as well, but this is definitely lacking some depth, and any initial tartness and citric jolt at the front soon dissipates after the first few sips; pleasant, just not an exceptional example, and a very pronounced cereal note that isn’t quite what I’m looking for in a sour ale. Medium finish: lots of candy sugar, honey, and some red fruit maltiness. skoisirius (477), Seattle, Washington, USA Jul 13, 2008 Bottle and tap. Odd to me this doesn’t taste more like wood after a supposed 20 months. Fairly non-impressive on most accounts, thin and wishing for more.
