3.2 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
On tap at Holy Grale. Aroma of some spice, not heavy, but also with a background of what you’d expect from a bruin (but more subtle). Taste starts slightly estery-sweet, followed by the winter spices which persist through the aftertaste but never overwhelm. The underlying body of this beer could be more assertive. The taste ends with little to moderate cloying, a mix of bitterness, malt, and the spice. This beer definitely improves with a little warming. Do not serve too cold.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
750 ml bottle into tulip glass, best before 1/21/2012. Pours hazy deep orange/copper color with a 2 finger fairly dense off white head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Spotty foamy lacing clings on the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of golden raisin, plum, lemon, pear, apple, white grape, white pepper, clove, candi sugar, light caramel, bread, herbal, grass, and yeast earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of fruity/spicy yeast, earthy hops, and moderate dark/bready malt sweetness; with solid strength. Taste of golden raisin, plum, lemon, pear, apple, white grape, white pepper, clove, candi sugar, light caramel, bread, herbal, grass, and herbal/yeast earthiness. Good amount of earthy yeast spice on the finish; with lingering notes of golden raisin, plum, lemon, pear, apple, white grape, pepper, clove, candi sugar, bread, light caramel, herbal, and yeast earthiness on the finish. Nice complexity and solid robustness of fruity/spicy yeast, earthy hops, and moderate dark/bready malt sweetness; with a nice malt/yeast flavor balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium-high carbonation and medium bodied; with a very smooth, crisp, and lightly prickly mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is a nice Belgian dark ale. All around good complexity, balance, and solid robustness of fruity/spicy yeast, earthy hops, and moderate dark/bready malt sweetness; and very smooth and crisp to drink. A nicely enjoyable offering.

2.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 7/20
They call it a "winter" beer so you’ll keep drinking it after Christmas. Thinner and plainer than most Christmas ales, although I did like the cinnamon aroma.

I ad this at Flying Saucer. Pours reddish-brown with a off white head. Taste lightly sour, cherry, dark fruits. I thought this was good. I would drink this again.

4.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Draft at Farmers Cabinet. Dark but clear red with a tight foamy head. Certainly more mellow than the usual sour Petrus that I’m used to finding in the States. Gentle caramel sweetness with a lot of light red fruits. Sugar plums. Cherries Jubilee. Fantastic!

3.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Pours dark brown with a huge tan head...nice retention and lacing. Aroma has some caramel and brown sugar, raisin...all subdued a bit by light earthy/woody notes. Flavor has raisin and roastiness with subtle leather and earthy bitterness. Mouthfeel is medium and silky with a slightly roasted dry finish. Very subdued beer but complex in its restraint.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Reddish-amber, dark, cloudy ale. Active, off-white head. Aroma is like stone, moss, spring water, and cinnamon. The taste is full, malty, cinnamony, and bitter. It is not too sweet as I feared it would be. It is actually quite good. The bitterness from the hops comes in late to crush the maltiness in pleasurable fashion. Here’s to drinking a winter ale in summer in Texas!
