Bottle at Pfaffen, Koln, 26/04/13. Hazed golden amber with a good sized white head. Nose is dark malt, caramel, light grass, dark fruit. Taste comprises fruits, dark malt, light boozey tones, sugars. Medium bodied with bite, fine carbonation, dry finish with a touch of alcohol. Decent bock.

On tap at the beer hall in Cologne. Pours a crystal clear, lighter amber colored body with a two finger-width, foamy, off-white head that dissipates quickly and leaves a light lacing. Aroma is sweet corn and DMS with a bit of a bready caramel note, touches of fruit, and a light grass. Flavor is similar. Sweet DMS with some bready caramels, a light grassy bitterness, some fruit, and grain. Finishes dry and cloying before leaving a medium length aftertaste. Medium-light body and a soft, moderate carbonation. Overall, another bad beer from these guys. Straight DMS and tough to put down. A bit better than their Kölsch, but not by much.

Dogbrick (6033) - Columbus, Ohio, USA - DEC 2, 2011
On draught at the brewpub in Köln. The beer pours a clear orange-gold color with a medium thick and fluffy off-white head that dissipates slowly. Sticky small patches of lacing on the glass. Aroma of toasted malt and ripe fruits. Medium body with a richly malty character and notes of grassy hops and sweet fruit in the background. The finish is sweet with a lingering malt aftertaste. Pretty good all around.

My Bottom Line :
Honeyed malts benefit from a firm grassy hop presence yet their residual sugars still succeed in lasting well beyond the green hop bitterness.

Further Personal Perceptions :
-A dollop of foam decorates the misty dark gold.
-This Heller Bock is obviously brewed with the same ingredients as their Original (Kölsch).
-The flavor profile is balanced, if not completely cohesive.
-This brew is flavorful and pleasant, but it is not as polished as I would like it to be.
-The honeyed malts tend to smother the hops even though the latter’s bitterness is still quite decent.

Bottle.

Bottle at the Ausschank in Heumarkt, Köln, as Bockbier
Beautiful golden color, generous head, compact. The aroma is mild, malty, but also some alcohol and glue. It has a good body strength; some malt flavor (not exceptional but better than the average bottled Bock), and enough residual sugars. The bitterness is correct, on the low edge. Good.
