1.2 AROMA 2/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 2/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 3/20 Pawola22 (3101) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - APR 20, 2013
On tap at the beer hall in Cologne. Pours a crystal clear, pale yellow colored body with a finger-width, frothy, white head that dissipates slowly and leaves a moderate lacing. Aroma is straight DMS and sweet malts. Almost like I just opened a can of corn. Touches of grainy pale malts and grass, but this is bad. Flavor is similar. Sweet cooked corn, a light graininess from the malts, and a light grass. Finishes dry and a bit cloying with a very light bitterness. Short aftertaste following a light body and a moderately active carbonation. Overall, one of the worst Kölsch’s I’ve ever had. They should be embarrassed to serve this at their restaurant in the heart of Cologne. Awful.

3x0,33cl draughts @Pfaffen Brauerei Max Päffgen, Heumarkt, Köln. Jan 2013 - If I remember my 4-Kölsch-day correctly and mental notes-to-self serve me well, this was the most herbal and hop-bitter of both clean Paffgen/Pfäfggen (don’t ask: "family rivalries") Kölsch I tried, a tad bolder/aka more Czech Pilsner-like than the Friesenheimer Päffgen Kölsch and mercifully lacking the unpasteurised off-bouquets of the Mühlen-Kölsch across the Heumarkt. When in Köln... (and not during carneval, which I happened to be as well, 1 week later: do not try if you do not like to be frisked before quaffing).
3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 Shaney (1735) - Köln / Cologne, GERMANY - JAN 3, 2013
#1436
Ein malzbetontes Kölsch aus Lohmar, dass gut süffig ist. Zur Referenz kommen allerdings die obergärige Fruchtigkeit und der Hopfen zu kurz. Dennoch das beste Kölsch am Heumarkt!
3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 BeerViking (1427) - Lüneburg, Lower Saxony, GERMANY - DEC 31, 2012
Flip-top bottle, way too lively so it was impossible to pour without sediment. Still, a nice gentle hoppy aroma, crisp, malty, slightly nutty and spicy, with a good hop balance.

Clear golden color with a dense white head. Sweet malt nose with a light yeastiness and biscuit notes. A light floral hop aroma as well. The flavor is sweet and clean. Nice bread and biscuit malt sweetness. Mild yeast and floral hops and no real bitterness to it. Very light and drinkable.

Tap @ brewery in Cologne. Clear golden appearance with a fluffy white head. A bit grainy, slightly herbal, grassy aroma. Smooth, grassy, a bit husky, grainy flavor.
