Wrote a review at Roscoe’s but was thinking what was I missing--the Belgian part. somehow opens up and clarifies the stout aspects of it. aromas of chocolate, roast malt, sawdust. Has a medium texture, which means light for stout, not that oaty oily you find elsewhere. Taste of roast malt, molasses and resin.

On tap at The Stumbling Monk. Very dark brown, pretty much looks black in this sparsely-lit bar. Rich and roasty, with a distinctive yeast flavor that sets it apart from most other imperial stouts I’m used to tasting. Very enjoyable.

Draft at Cornbread Cafe, Eugene. Pours a dark brown/black, nearly opaque, decent amount of tan head. Aroma sweet yeastiness, akin to a tripel, pFriem’s house strain? Raisins, etc. body thin but sinister. Finish is huge, coffee, cherries, booze, an almost earthy roast character. Finish could last a little longer, warming is all that really lingers.

On draught at baileys belgian beer fest - pours clear black with small head. Nose of roasted malt and coffee. Taste of nice roasted malt, boozy, warming. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

On tap at pFriem, pours a deep dark mahogany with a medium beige head. Aroma bring out notes of cocoa powder, cardamom and a touch of coffee -- very light on the nose. Flavour brings out rich notes of cocoa powder, followed by subtle coffee and cardamom. There’s some Belgian yeast in there as well, making it very light and velvety. Extremely complex and smooth, masking the ABV very well. Exceptionally round and flavourful, yet remaining easily drinkable. Wonderful stuff.

Bottle:   Black, large tannish head, creamy, very creamy, with nice lacing.   Looks like dessert!   Subtle nose, soft roasted malts, a little graham cracker.   As it warms a bit of dark pitted fruit comes out a bit.   Smooth on the tongue, malty, soft roasted malt profile, and again with some dark pitted fruit.   Almost has in much in common with a Dubbel than it does a Stout.   Body and mouthfeel are moderate.   Backside has a lot more graham cracker, apple skin, sweet malts (only slightly roasted).   Did I mention sweet?   This one is fairly sweet, especially picks up on the backside.   Very clean too.   First time I have had a beer from pFriem, and certainly wont be the last.   Good stuff!

On tap at Brouwer’s. This is actually a great stout -- I almost wish there were a version brewed with American yeast, though, as the farmhouse note and effervescence offered by the Belgian strains are counter to what I like in a stout. Dry as a bone, this one is -- and super-roasty. Chocolate and a bit of coffee roast underneath. Another good one from a new brewery in Oregon -- I’ll definitely keep my eye on these guys...

On draught at Bailey’s Taproom 2/15. Stout with a pleasing sour tinge on the finish and a refreshing yeast character. Adds depth to and evens out the usual stout flavors.

Big fruity and lightly toasty nose. Clean dry and toasty with a bubblegum and chocolate finish. Smooth and easy but the booze definitely hits you. Hints of soapy coriander.
