When the first Pale Ales were sailed around the Cape to arrive in India in the early 18th century, outcries of “Zounds! Jolly good! and Huzzah!” were heard across the East Indian subcontinent. Similar exclamations are to be expected when sniffing the piney aroma and tasting the big hops, huge citrus and candy-like malt of Pfriem’s own IPA. Drink up, Guv’nor.

From bottle. Pours a clear golden with a one-finger white head. Aroma and taste of pine hops with a gentle sweetness. Very drinkable. Medium mouthfeel and perfect carbonation.

Bottle. Pours cloudy golden, notes of orange and grape sugars, notes are malty and ultra bitter medium to fuller mouthfeel. Not good.

Clear dark orange body, thin off-white head, spotty lacing. Peach, some grapefruit, too much toffee for my liking, some toast. Medium bodied, light sweetness, moderate bitterness.

Malt sweetness and hop aroma with a hint of bitterness are battling in my nose. This clear yellow brew has a nice white head and I can see a lot of bubbles rising. The taste is lightish bodied and kinda crisp with sweetness quickly taken over by the hop taste and immediately following the bitter oils from those green flowers take over leaving a green leafy aftertaste.

Appearance: clear pale gold with two fingers of loose white head diminishing gradually to a thin skim, moderate lacing. (4/5) Aroma: dank, pine, floral, citrus, pale biscuity malt. (8/10) Taste: moderate sweet, moderately strong bitter. (8/10) Palate: medium to full body, moderate carbonation, lingering and building bitter finish. (4/5) That’s a nice IPA - West Coast dank (yes, I mean pot - it smells like pot) and slightly funky, with a well-balanced pale malt supporting on the back end. Dunno what else there is to to say here. Fun. Get it. (16/20)

Bottle in Portland, about two weeks old. Delicious freshness. Woodsy hops on the nose with clean malts backing. Some citrus, some caramel but everything is integrated and towards a clear vision. This is a well-crafted IPA, no doubt. Not earth-shaking but more importantly not overly ambitious or unfocused. I want to drink a lot of these.

Bottle thanks to Daniel. Pours a clear gold with small white head. The aroma is dank and citrus. Medium mouth, very bitter, dank, citrus, good.

Bottle. Colour...hazy golden-orange with a thick white head. Nose...definitely on the piney side, as opposed to the grapefruity side, with conifer pitch and crushed pine needles. Palate...right away, the whole of the palate is awash in massively piney hops and tremendous opulence! The mouth is full and rich with flavours of star fruit, quince and kumquat and there is a deftly balanced finish to round it all out.

I have four ways of quickly refering to the flavor of an American IPA; citrus, pine, smoke, and malt. I like the first three. I don't understand how anyone could ever refer to a beer with a dominant malt flavor as an IPA. But we do. I refer to the flavor of this hop profile as smokey. It's good. Mildly bitter. Crisp and clear palate. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle, shared on the bus at RBSG. Clear medium gold. Piney, dank hop character, clean biscuit malts, bitter finish. Solid.
