Aroma is subdued floral hops, pepper/spice tones and a slight almost toasted marshmallow hint. Flavour is more rounded than the original IPA (from Phillips) Pleasing maltiness with a peppery zing to start quickly transitioning to hops then more hops. Finishing with a lasting bitterness.
Credit to Phillip for this one. Hops do not dominate this beer from start to finish. Like so many other IPA’s trying to "Hop it Up. Much more to this IPA than just extra hops.’ The first thing you taste isn’t hops, but it doesn’t take long. Secondly 8.5 a/v and you’d never know it. | 4.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 19/20 | Aug 1, 2005 Pours a cloudy copper with a fairly restrained nose of hops. Yeast in the bottle adds a nice zing to the mouthfeel which is grapefruity with some whiskiness from the malt. My only double IPA thusfar but it’s a great one! Served at room temperature, at fridge temp its not quite as distinguishable from Phillips single. IslandHaole (1035), Onna-Son, Okinawa-Ken, Japan
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 16/20 | Jun 27, 2005 A medium-dark Amber color. Thick tan head, nice lacing. Resinous fruity aroma, very well balanced between chewy caramel malts and aggressive piney bitter hops. A great creamy feel on the tounge. The 8.5% ABV is well masked. A subtle IIPA, not just an amped up dose of hop juice but a well made, balanced delicious brew. I’d drink this every day if I could! Thank you Josh! mds (2112), Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Dark orangey amber with a good sized head (3+). Burnt caramel aroma with a touch of hops and leafy resin. Bitter, almost astringent at times. Hops lack the character and complexity I recalled. Resiny bite, a bit rough in spots as the bitterness is less rounded than before. Smooth but average-light palate. Seems to be dated the 2nd week of February. Presumably this is almost a year old then, and not just now nearing its expiry date. A dissapointing contrast to the first sample. 7/3+/3/7/14 - 3.4<P>
June 2005 Bottle @ Volo. Dark amber body. Good sized persistent white head. Big hoppy aroma, with moderate citrus and resin. Flavour is obviously hop dominated, with be resiny hops overshadowy hints of citrus. Long lingering humuloney (spelling?) aftertaste. Hops echo forth long after swallowing. Very nice medium body. Excellent beer! 8/4/8/4/17 - 4.1 blankboy (3204), Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Pours an amber/orange with a long lasting white head. Nice sparkling body. Aroma is moderately hoppy and, surprisingly, malty. The flavour is bitter and once again the maltiness really surprises you. Hard to believe this beer is from B.C. as it tastes so much like an American IPA. Hides the 8.5% very well. Great beer, recommended! HogTownHarry (4000), Toronto (Harbourfront), Ontario, Canada

Interesting aroma, sour yeasty with malt overtones. Pours a lively, pillowy off-white head, bubbly on the pour but quick settling. Some side-lacing. Golden amber with a hint of red colour. After sitting for a bit, strong sweet maltiness (nice!). Medium bodied, the malt competes with the hops on the linger - better balanced than many IPAs. I’ll get this one again. To get through it, I broke up gulps with a bit of another stout and a strong ale. Great hoppy grapefruit aroma. Refreshing as well as creamy on the palate. grapfruit bittery aftertaste, softened by malts.
