tronraner (1906), Maryville, Tennessee, USA Nov 7, 2006 Bomber, thanks to Oakes. Pours dark reddish mahogany with a small tan head. The aroma is grapefruit and pine, caramel, raisin, and some floral hints. The flavor also has some grapefruit and pine, balanced by slightly fruity malts with a little bit of roasty character. I pick up some graham cracker notes in there, too. The finish is moderately bitter with some distinct raisin, and leaves a woody bitter aftertaste. This is pretty good stuff. SpringsLicker (2041), Tennessee, USA Oct 19, 2006 Thanks to Oakes for this one!
Pours black with a minimal off-white head. Caramel malt aroma.
Roast malt flavor that quickly adds a bitter roast bite in the finish with some assistance from the bittering hops. The sweetness stays underneath the bitter malts the complete time. Not quite a Porter, not quite a Brown Ale. Roasty, bitter, dry, yet smooth and medium bodied. Different and uniquely good brew. HazelRah (276), Summerland, British Columbia, Canada Sep 23, 2006 Opaque with cherry highlights. Intense chocolate and roast malt flavours backed by straight-ahead bitterness. Oily. Nekronos (2261), Xalapa, Mexico Sep 19, 2006 Veyr dark, with reddish features. foam interesting. NOt too bitter but keeps the style tastes in it all the time. Bov (5403), Bienne, Switzerland Jun 14, 2006 Updated: Feb 17, 2007courtesy of Oakes - dark brown colour and a very little foam; slightly roasted malty nose with lemony and cheesy notes; effervescent with a good, oily malt body underneath; very dry, bitter and long vegetal, woody finish with hints of mint - a very good and boldly different beer DougShoemaker (2855), Toronto, Canada Jun 6, 2006 Roasted malt and hops in the aroma, mahogany, pours a small tan head. Tastes of bitter malt, some good hops also, and hints of almond. Sweet and bitter, a pleasure trying this at Volo as it’s quite unique. Suttree (2702), Knoxville, Tennessee, USA May 27, 2006 Blacj, with a nice copper tint, and a thin tan head. Smells tasty - Maple, molassess (the best part of the mole!) and maybe some smoke. Perhaps some coffee and pine, too. Rich palate, and then mostly porter-ish caracterisitcs at forst, then a crisp, woodsy finish. Thanks to Oakes for the trade. joss (3632), Garching b. München, Germany May 19, 2006 Bottle. Dark chestnut, low creamy brown head. Grass, herbal and piney aroma. Roasted nuttynes overlaid with plenty of hoppy goodness. Slightlly more chewy body than the rest of the Phillips beers I have tried so far. Ends on a bitter dry hop note which lingers on, a hint of bandaid retronasal.
Enjoyable stylemix.
