Pours dark brown, nice lacing. Strong beer. Smells of bread, pine, strange metallic smell. Taste is molasses mixed with hop grapefruit. Unique dark beer. Almost taste like a barrel aged beer without the whiskey taste. Not bad for a strong dark beer.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20
Rating #853 - December 23, 2013 - Beer 23 in the Craft BeerAdvent Calendar. Iím going to have cabin fever this winter if I canít track down another one of these.Pours a enrapturing black, with a bubbly tan head. Aroma is a violent clash between toasted malt, and grassy floral hops. Taste is extremely hoppy, resinous grassy floral and noble hop notes tempered with a pleasant coffee, chocolate, burnt sugar sweetness of the toasted malt which is the dominant player. Fantastic imperial IBA.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle - Roast malts and pine hops. Jet black with a bubble big brown head. Roasted malts with a hint of the hops and finishes with a bitter roast. With a very hop forward nose I though the balance would be off, but the taste is dominated by roast which I prefer. Well done for my taste.

Pours dark amber with a moderate amount of head that lingers. Nice soft mouthfeel lots of hops and malt odor with flavour to match. A bit of coffee. Warm aftertaste. Impressed.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Pours brown-black, with almost no head. Nose is espresso, cacao and liquorice. Taste follows the nose with a pleasant slight coffee bean acidity and dry bitter (liquorice+hop) finish

Bottle, shared with my wife. Very dark brown with a thick light brown head that reduces to a chunky flotsam and then stays until the very last sip, leaving heavy lace all the way. This black IPA allows for some expression of its roast character, but not much, giving over to big leafy, piney hop awesomeness. Finish is long and thoroughly bitter. Very balanced, with no off flavours. Phillips has redeemed itself with me over their last few beers Iíve had from them. This was a truly outstanding black IPA.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
650ml brown bottle. Deep brown pour, head is steady and tan, pretty tightly beaded, lots of lace sticking around, nice looking brew. Nose has mild hop notes, a bit piney, some citrus, light chocolate notes. Taste has some coffee and chocolate malts, some hop notes. Finishes with notes of dark chocolate, mild coffee, late piney notes. Mild bittereness, some roasty notes lingering as well. Body is medium, mouthfeel is fairly creamy with tight carbonation. Ok, but not really screaming Imperial in anyway except the abv (which is pretty well hidden). Worth trying though...
