Pours dark amber with a moderate amount of head that lingers. Nice soft mouthfeel lots of hops and malt odor with flavour to match. A bit of coffee. Warm aftertaste. Impressed. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Fair black ipa, fresh bottle from LCBO, but maybe didn’t release quick enough. More roast than hops, smells good. Not so drinkable.

Alcoholic and burnt. Not much going on here except for a lot of alcohol and the novelty of a black beer with tons of floral aroma. cognitive dissonance is not sufficiently interesting to merit the syrupy alcoholic mouthfeel and ashen malt flavours. Uninteresting.

Bottle: Poured a clear black color ale with a large dark brown foamy head with OK retention and some lacing. Aroma of dry roasted malt with some light astringent notes. Taste is dominated by dry roasted malt notes with some astringent notes and some citrus hoppy notes with subtle tart notes in the aftertaste. Body is slightly below average with good carbonation. I thought this one balance and was too astringent for my own taste.

[Bottle (650ml)] Pours a very dark amber-brown with a large long-lasting frothy tan head. Lots of lacing. Slightly odd aroma is roasty along with leafy hops, coffee, earthy notes and some chocolate. Flavour of roasted malt, leafy hops, coffee, light lactic notes and a long big bitter finish. Average to medium bodied. There aren’t many Black IPAs I love and this one falls in that category, just good.

Bottle from the LCBO. Dark brown with red highlights under a huge lingering tan head that leaves patchy lace. Big roasty nose with a decent pine undertone. Light sweet roasted toffee with medium bitterness of coffee, chocolate, pine and some grapefruit. Medium+ creamy body with a lingering bitter finish and average carbonation. Alcohol is well integrated. Mmmmm.

Dark as a cold northern night. Tan head that has staying power. Nice lacing. Big bold flavours. Bitter and roasty. And you can hardly taste the 8.5% alcohol. Not really familiar with Philips but this beer makes me want to try more.
