On tap. Pours a very dark brown with almost no head. Aromas of hay, roasted malt, and bit of cocoa powder. Flavors are similar. OK but not memorable.

Pours a deep mahogany with a thin, dissipating beige head. Nose is roasted with some minor eggy or sour milk. Flavour is rich with chocolate and toasted malt seemed borderline a Schwartzbier. Slightly sour. This wasn’t really my thing.

Pours dark mahogany with ok lacing. Some astringency and a little malty coffee. Ok. A little bitter with slight sour mash finish. On tap at brewery.

341ml bottle pours a dark brownish amber color with a finger of light beige head that settles quickly but leaves some decent lacing on the glass. Aroma is dark chocolate and caramel. Taste is a dark chocolate malty sweetness with a pronounced hop bitterness. Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. I thought this to be an enjoyable brew and recommend others to try it.

Growler from brewery. Pours deep brownish black with thing, bubbly beige head. Lots of road aroma, a bit of healthy barnyard funk, mixed nuts, unsweetened chocolate (and a bit of the same sour, metallic quality so prominent among Phillips’ brews). More hopped up than typical dunkels -- strong new world hop bitterness with a little complementary sweetness. Medium-bodied, dry and crisp.

Awful metallic funky flavor and aroma. Pours a dark brown with a a hazy body and a finger of shortlived beige head. The nose is sweet and lightly roasted with a gross hop flavor. Very unusual metallic and funky flavor with a bit of dark malt flavor and fruity flavor. Overall, quite bad.

Was drinking this with a guy I met last night... he was going on about how dunkel was one of his favourite styles and everything, the whole while I was wondering why his seemed so light compared to mine. Figured it was an optical illusion. Apparently it turned out he was drinking a pale ale. I for one am a fan of the dunkel, and despite the name I’m also a fan of this beer. The mainstream may never go for the sours or strong IPAs, but I could see this style definitely catch on amongst people who aren’t afraid of the dark. Another reviewer had a problem with a sour finish, I didn’t, pretty sure it was a bad batch.

341ml brown bottle. Dark coppery brown pour. Seems fairly clear, light tan coloured head, average size. Nose has dark chcocolate malt, and unsurprisingly, it has that same yeasty signature that all Phillips brews have. Taste is caramelly with cocoa powder, peanut skins, and a nice level of earhty roasty malt. Decent hit of bitterness coming from roast/dark malts at the end. Ends dryly with notes of iron and toasty grains. Average bodied, smooth mouthfeel, somewhat creamy. Pretty basic dunkel, though Phillips house character threatens to ruin the whole thing at certain points. I’m ok with finishing the other two bottles from the taster pack. Will stick to buying their HopBox from now on.

Beer appears to cola brown with a sad bubble ring. Ugggg!! Beer number two of the variety pack and they both suck so far. No aroma worth writing about........fine it has some nuts and brown sugar with a weird sour finish. Taste is the same. So watery so boring. SOAP, PENNIES!!!! I refuse to drink the rest of this.

On tap at a new bistro called "Bitter" in DTES neighborhood of Vancouver. Served in a slender mug. Dark amber  translucent in color. Little aroma or carbonation evident. A nice pleasant dunkel overall, but not an exceptional beer.
