Way too sweet and cloying both in nose and palate. Not much in the looks department either, with nary a head to be found. Sticky palate. pootzboy (1048), Hawgville, Ontario, Canada

Rather clear red-cola color with a very light cap that does not last long.
Faint nose: wisps of dark candi sugar, caramel malts...very faint.
Flavor profile...seems a tad sweet with the Candi sugar and thin on malts, hops are non existant...the yeast does produce some nutty tastes that offset the smokey molasses but overal this is a kind of thin uneventful dubbel.
If you were expecting Bernardus Pater you will miss the value of this ale...it is a very approachable dubble for people who are not really used to the Belgians styles ...kind of like Leffe...it serves a purpose as a gateway dubbel but that’s about all. | 1.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 4/10 | 2/5 | 3/10 | 2/5 | 6/20 | May 3, 2007 Darker mudy brown with no head. Sugary and syrupy flavour with minimal nose. Perhaps it was off but something didn’t seem right. Oakes (8172), Beyond the Great Firewall, China
| 1.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 2/10 | 4/5 | 1/10 | 1/5 | 3/20 | Apr 20, 2007 Bright reddish-brown colour...looks nice. Sort of a light aroma with vague caramel, molasses and spent grains. Thin, hollow and gutless nuts/caramel taste. Sweet, bland and poorly executed. Malt flavours are too thin and simplistic. This yeast is useless. Gets worse as the glass goes, too. CapFlu (3494), Victoria, British Columbia, Canada
| 2.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 4/10 | 4/5 | 4/10 | 2/5 | 8/20 | Apr 19, 2007 (660ml bottle) Purchased at the Strath in Victoria for $4.95. Deep ruby body with a creamy tan head. Nose of roasted coffee grounds and a minor egg aroma. Roasted malt mixed sour milk. One of my least favourite Phillips brews. tiggmtl (4312), Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
| 2.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 2/5 | 6/10 | 2/5 | 11/20 | Apr 19, 2007 Malt forward aroma is quite sweet with caramel, brown sugar, some fruity esters and a hint of butterscotch. Clear ruby brown body is topped by a fizzy, tan head that diminishes rapidly to ring. Sweet caramel flavour with some fruity esters, doughy yeast and a hint of peat and dark malt bitterness at the finish. Medium light body with fizzy carbonation. Tulip glass. Cellar temperature. Bottle (Brewery Creek, Apr-07). Crit (2417), New Westminster, British Columbia, Canada

| 2.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 2/5 | 6/10 | 2/5 | 14/20 | Apr 6, 2007 Very faint, almost undetectable dark fruit/malt aroma. Pours a rich dark red with a few bubbles and no head, not even a ring or lace. Tastes like Dr. Pepper with some hops. Low carbonation, light body, light peppery/hoppy aftertaste. A passable dubbel, and after tasting their regular Surly (tripel) I’d have to say this is a step in the right direction, but we’re not quite there yet.
