2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 12/20
Aroma is strong on the roasted character but not a lot of counterpoint other than some fruitiness. Opaque dark body is topped by a low tan-brown head that recedes rapidly to a very slight partial cover and ring. Sweet chocolate with berries and ashy roastiness in the flavour. Vanilla, hazelnut and bourbon are long in the aftertaste. Medium body with somewhat low carbonation. Half-pint glass. Just above fridge temperature. Bottle purchased at Toby’s in Feb-2012.

Bottle. Black pour with a thick mocha head. Aroma is lots of creamy chocolate, malty with a touch of oak. Flavour is sweet chocolate, a touch of coffee. Light bodied but silky and creamy smooth. Not bad.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Noir avec un petit col marron. L’arôme du malt torréfié avec du bourbon et un peu du café. C’est assez léger en bouche. Un peu sucré avec du bourbon et du café. Ça manque du corps pour le style. C’est bonne mais assez timide.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle: Thanks Gothgargoyle: Served in a Chouffe glass:
Medium sized lively brown head. Leaves a headless black beer in my glass.
Aromas of grains, rice, watery coffee, some roast, dusty wood, thin prunes and tobacco and some thin mocha hints and even thinner bourbon notes... Seriously thin!
Flavours of some roast, some bitters but all quite watery, a hint of liquor/bourbon with a marzepin touch, some (nasty) wood roast, some prunes and a hint of malty hay... All mixed watery!
Aftertaste is thin and light and watery: some roast, prunes and mocha with some malts...
Low carbo, watery mouthfeel and texture and more than medium bodied.
One of the few times the BA beer doesn’t add much at all...

Bottle share. Pours dark brown, light brown edging, big-bubble tan cap that vanishes quick, thin rope. Aroma of vanilla, raisin, bit of wood, sweet chocolate, booze. Taste is bittersweet. Thin mouthfeel, slow development to medium dryness.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Visual: The barrel-aged version of their Hammer Imperial Stout; I still have a bottle of it in my cellar but I expect this one to be better. Pours inkjet black with a smallish, very long lasting creamy head, a good layer of retention, lots of micro bubbly streams near the base of the glass.
Nose: mocha caramel malts with a good hint of bourbon, very aromatic (lvl-8)-pungency
Attack: creamy silky texture
Mid-palate: (lvl-7)-dense malty sweetness, (MAIN) bitter roasted coffee malts, chocolate, licorice, soy sauce, bourbon booziness
Finish: quick black pepper spiciness, syrupy texture, sweet roasted malt finish.
Summary: An interesting complexity with a good body and balance. It has just a touch of watery mouthfeel near the finish but overall very nice for the price.

a Pours an opaque black with a large light brown head that slowly settles but leaves a thick ring and tons of lace on the glass. Aroma is bourbon, vanilla, roasted malts, oak, and molasses. Flavour is bourbon, vanilla, roasted malts, mild alcohol, cocoa, medium bitterness, mild caramel and a bit of a creamy mouthfeel.

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Dark beer with a small brown head. Smells of smells of dates, vanilla and malts. Taste is chocolate, dark fruit and malts. The finish is malty and the barrel aged alcohol comes out at the end. A little rich in the malts for my palate.

Rating #851 - December 22, 2013 - Beer 22 in the Snowcase. Beautiful dark brown pour with a fairly weak tan head with mild lacing. Aroma is a hint of dark chocolate, toasted malt, burnt sugar Warmth of the alcohol present but balanced by the sharp bitterness of the stout, Definite notes of vanilla and charcoal from the bourbon barrel. Superb.

3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Pours an opaque black with a big frothy brown head that leaves lots of sticky lace. Aroma of vanilla, bourbon, roasted malts, molasses, smoked wood and a hint of alcohol in the background. Taste is bourbon, roasted malts, alcohol and wet wood. Nice barrel aged beer but it’s just too boozy... Aging this further in the bottle might help but the booze dominates a bit too much on the finish.
