Imperial stout was originally brewed to satisfy the Czarist courts. Because it was transported across the freezing Baltic, Russian imperial stout was brewed with a high level of alcohol. Rich, flavourful, deep chocolate colour, with a roasted barley nose. Break down that wall... or conform & be dull.

Nice but it falls short for me. Enjoyed the barrel aged one more. Pours a pure black with a finger of dense tan head, light espresso and cocoa notes. Rich and robust with a light dark fruit notes, mild smoky toasted malts. Nicely done but not a spectacular brew.

Bottle: Thanks Gothgargoyle: Served in a Chouffe glass: Black beer with a medium sized dark beige light brown head. Aromas of coffee, roast, some chocolate, some mocha, some olives, some sweet roast and malt roast. Flavour is a bit thin, close to a bit watery, yet with food this beer shows it has some body... Bitter, roasty, sweet coal, malt roast with mocha and caramel tones while this beer does not come anything near the sweet zone, some coffee and raisin and wood roast and a chocolate tint. Pretty nice but not deep... Aftertaste is roasty, bitters, soke coffee, some chocolate... Low carbo more watery than creamy mouthfeel and texture and a more than medium body. Decent but missing some soul! Drink it with some food and itís better.

Good imperial stout. Alcohol is well masked by the rich flavour of roasted malts. Some chocolate and coffee notes. Quite enjoyable.

341ml brown bottle from the Snowcase. Black pour, creamy tan head and lots of sheet lacing in the glass. Nose has coffee and roast. Taste has coffee and roasted malts. Finishes with some roast and chocolate malt, late bitterness. Full bodied with a nice silky mouthfeel. Pretty good Impy, not the most aggressive, but has some good flavours, Drinks quite easily for itís strength.

Rating #811 - December 8, 2013 - Late to the party with Beer 6 from the snowcase 650ml bottle from Coop due to misship in my advent calendar.. 8.3%. Beautiful dark brown pour with a fairly foamy tan head with mild lacing. Aroma is chocolate, coffee, roasted barley, mild alcohol. Taste is oaty and thick, almost sludgy on the mouth feel, but layered with hints of vanilla and chocolate. Medium-heavy alcohol warmth but not ultra boozy on the palate.Superb

A nice dark beer. Dark chocolate in color with a brown foamy head, good lacing. Smells of sweet roasted barley, chocolate and molasses. Taste is chocolate, bitter coffee, tobacco with roasted malt finish. Palate is creamy. Definite body warming alcohol content. A nice stout, but I find the lingering after taste a bit too much. Not a clean finish like a Guinness. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Snow case day 6!(Iím a bit of a Phillips lover Iíll be honest...) Pours an opaque black with a large brown head that settles and leaves good lace on the glass. Aroma is roasted malts, coffee, chocolate and a mild sweet dark fruitiness/sweet maltiness mix. Flavour is rich roasted malts, dark chocolate, coffee, light malty sweetness, nice moderate bitterness(coffee/dark chocolate like) and a moderately dry finish. Excellent brew

Pours an opaque black with a thick brown head and lace all the way up the glass. Aroma of roasted malts, vanilla, choose and coffee. Taste is roasted malts, dark bitter chocolate and espresso with a nice bitterness into the finish and medium dry finish. Well rounded flavors and smooth.
