3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
UPDATED: JUL 24, 2012 Bottle - Flowery hop aroma with a little caramel and spice. Clear gold with minimal quick dissipating head. Tastes just like it smells, with a nice bitterness that lingers. A great local Canadian beer.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
UPDATED: AUG 18, 2012 From bottle in a tulip glass at Pivo pub in DTES. Very nice floral hop aroma. Nice light bronze color. Nice citrus hop edge flavor. A very nice hoppy IPA overall!
Update July 8, 2012: on tap at Irish Times in Victoria. Every bit as good as the earlier bottled sample. This seems to be Phillips’ signature beer, and they do a great job of it. It’s nice big citrus hops on the nose and palate. A bit of malt creeping through on the finish. Hop! Hop! Hop!
Aug 18, 2012: From bottle at The Terminal Pub in New West. Yep, still got one mother load of hops up front assaulting the taste buds. A significant malt aftertaste. Still a great beer!

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Looks like a typical IPA. Nice spiderwebs down the side of the glass. Smells like pineapple and lilac. Lovely hops coating my mouth at the moment. Clean aftertaste. Solid solid solid is the only way to describe this. Phillips rocks, Victoria’s lucky to have them.

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
341ml bottle pours a golden orange color with a 2 finger white head that has decent retention and leaves a thin film of lacing on the glass. Aroma is grassy and citrus hops with some light caramel. Taste is big bold citrus and grassy hop bitterness over an underlying malty sweetness. Medium body and lively carbonation leave a pleasant sensation on the pallet. A nice IPA style brew, but many are much better balanced that this one.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
UPDATED: JUN 26, 2012 Smells like hops.
Pungent herbal, grassy taste, lots of bitter. A bit metallic with a drawn out aftertaste.
Looks and smells great overall. Tastes really good (if you like hops -- and I do). But it’s an inferior animal to what was in the Original Phillips IPA (pictured with the orange label). Now THAT was a tasty, tasty beer. It had an interesting caramel tinge to it that made it really stand out from other northwest IPAs. With that nuance eliminated, the new Hop Circle -- while good -- is tough to distinguish from the myriad of similar products put out by every other brewery in the region.

341 ml bottle at C’est What. Pours a cloudy golden orange with smallish white head. Aroma is citric and piney hops with solid caramel malt base. Flavour is big and hoppy (grapefruit, pine) with a nice caramel malt balance. Average plus body. Quite good.
