3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 Sham (1845) - Seattle, Washington, USA - DEC 13, 2006
Black with mahogany edges. Light to no head and no lacing. A rather large dose of chocolate. Some roast and bitterness. The chocolate follows right over to the flavor. A touch of smoke comes out with the roasty malts. Nice and full bodied with a chocolate finish.
3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 blankboy (5153) - Toronto, Ontario, CANADA - NOV 14, 2006
Bottle shared with HogTownHarry, GregClow & tupalev -- my bottle courtesy of Mirek. Pours a very dark brown with a small diminishing tan head. Roasty aroma with some faint sour fruit, hops and chocolate -- quite nice. Flavour’s also nice and roasty with some chocolate, sour fruit and a light bitter finish. (It doesn’t bother me but is it supposed to be sour?) Medium bodied. Good stuff, I really dig this brewery.
3.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 Gorbalev (2827) - Ontario, CANADA - NOV 14, 2006
Bottle shared with GregClow, Hogtown Harry, and Blankboy, courtesy of Blankboy. Nice roasty, sweet chocolate aroma. Pitch black, no head. Wow, sour acidic milk chocolate taste - not at all a good combination. It does have a decent old style porter character to it after a while. Wonder if the sourness should be there? Regardless, good porter from a very good brewery.
3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 GregClow (2736) - Toronto, Ontario, CANADA - NOV 2, 2006
Bottle shared with HogTownHarry, tupalev & blankboy - blankboy’s bottle. Deep brown with a small beige head. Aroma - smoky, bitter chocolate, faint sourness, nice! Thin body. Flavour - mixture of roast, chocolate, and sourness. Not sure if the sourness is supposed to be there to be honest, but it gives it an interesting old style porter element. I’ll have to track down another bottle at some point to see if it’s intentional.
3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 HogTownHarry (5655) - Toronto (Harbourfront), Ontario, CANADA - NOV 2, 2006
Bottle (650ml). Shared with blankboy, GregClow and tupalev, blankboy’s bottle. Opaque ruby-black, small diminishing tan head. Dry deep roast malt, bitter hops, bitter chocolate, some coffee, a it sours as it warms. Taste is VERY chocolate and VERY sour - but it works. Somewhat watery body, very carbonated, acidic and tart mouthfeel, quick finish. Very interesting.
3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 harrisoni (10950) - Ashford, Kent, ENGLAND - OCT 23, 2006
Bottlefrom BC Liquor Store. Black with ruby edges, thin tan head. Unsurprisingly a choc porter aroma. Somewhere between choc milk and dark choc. Some powder, some lactic. Nice choc. Needs more depth and complexity.
3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 1/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 13/20 tiggmtl (4516) - Vancouver, British Columbia, CANADA - SEP 22, 2006
Strong coffee, chocolate and tasty malt aroma. Opaque, dark brown body with a low, off white, fully diminishing head. Huge, thick, milk chocolate flavour offset by a fair finishing bitterness. Lightly minty and creamy note in the aftertaste - like a chocolate mint chip ice cream. Dry medium light body with decent carbonation but texture feels a bit thin. Tumbler. Just above fridge temperature. Bottle (BCLS on Commercial, Sep-06).
3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20 HazelRah (276) - Summerland, British Columbia, CANADA - JUL 15, 2006
Chocolate comes right through on the nose and is present, though restrained, on the palette. Only the faintest twinge of bitterness, but a great coffee finish.
3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 DuffMan (5202) - the land of bitumen, beef & beer, Alberta, CANADA - JUL 5, 2006
I thought this was terrific! Rich chocolate brown appearance with a thick brown head. Again, rich chocolaty aroma giving way to a very chocolat-dominated palate with low-medium bitterness to prevent this from becoming overbearingly sweet. Contrary to some of the other raters, I thought this had a medium-to-full body, with a rich mouthfeel. Well-integrated and very enjoyable.
2.9 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 Boutip (3979) - Gatineau, Quebec, CANADA - MAY 29, 2006
Bottle: Poured a black color ale with a medium head with good retention. Aroma of chocolate is subtler the name of the beer would suggest. Taste is drier then expected (I was expecting more sweet chocolate then anything else). Body is about average but lack the creamy texture that would have made this a great beer. Definitely not one of my favourite, I was expecting more from this brewery I guess.
