1.5 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 5/20
Pours crystal clear gold with a small, sudsy short-lived head.
Nose shows loads of rice, some alcohol and a little grainy malt.
Similar flavours but a bit more bready malt shows. Finishes with a mild metallic bitterness.
Very water body, carbonation is too high.

2 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 7/20
Bottle. Golden colour with a slim bubbly white head. Sweet dry and grainy aroma. Sweet tasting, malts and caramel and some very light bitterness. Very thin. Very forgettable stuff, just short of offensive.

2 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 8/20
The so-called famous beer of Mauritius. Could be the most beer of anywhere as, predictably, it tastes like any other macro low quality factory produced pale lager anywhere in the world. Light rusty brown in colour, looks ok actually, no head. Grainy cheap adjunct aromas with a blocky sweetness. Palate as expected - light with a corny adjunct character. Plenty of fizz.

2 AROMA 2/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 7/20
Has no aroma to speak of, which gets a 2 in my book, and Iíll save the 1ís for the really off-putting beers. Has a deep gold colour but unfortunately no substantial head. The flavour is all right though, with some sour hops notes amidst grains. but thereís also this weird bitterness on the back end that I find unappealing. Mouthfeel is reasonably crisp though, with no ugly tastes left in your mouth.. Nonetheless I donít find much to appreciate in this "legendary" beer by any stretch.

2.7 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
A flavoursome Mauritian lager that wipes the floor with most of the regional competition. Poured a hazy gold with a flat cap of wispy foam. Indifferent head retention. Bit of dough and a squeeze of lemon in a generally restrained aroma. Nice rounded mouthfeel, with a hint of spritz. A bit too soda-like to be entirely convincing. Very clean, with a surprising sour fruitiness - grapefruit mainly - and a firm bitter finish. This is streets ahead of 95% of the African beers I sampled on the Sep 2005 visit. (330ml can, many thanks to Simon Fraser)

Just picture, a group of Mauritius dancers, all jumping around gaily with their funny tassles and brighty coloured hats. After a while of their strenuous gallivanting and caterwauling they would all sit down with a collective "phew". What do you serve to these spent and thirsty men? Well if VB was available no doubt that would be the choice as we all know in Australia, that iconically, a good hard thirst needs a big cold Vic. But instead, this is Mauritius, and so the denizens of Port Louis need a cleansing drop. Arise from the ashes Phoenix beer. As far as pale lagers go this is not a bad drop. It is a well executed beer with an attention to brewing detail. Thanks to motelpogo for thisín Mauritian.

1.8 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 6/20
Sour tasting beer, with funky aroma. Smells like wet cardboard. Tastes hints at vinegar...not very good at all.
