Cask at the Monks Retreat (JDW), Reading. A phenomenal mild in my opinion. Shiny black in colour with a tawny hue, and a tan head; aroma of burnt treacle; thinly bodied but with rich locorice and burnt treacle flavours; and a finish that remids me of Pontefract Cakes. Excellent.

My sample was obviously in better nick than Spiesy’s. And it certainly made a change from a run of pale bitter/golden ales that have dominated what I have been drinking recently. Deep, almost opaque chocolate brown colour. Lasting pale beige head. Definite smoky notes in the aroma. The flavour is 100% mocha - chocolate and coffee. Smooth, soft finish. I was going to say that the body was rather thin for a stout but, now I get here, I discover it’s a mild. A bit of a hybrid I would say, and quite strong for a stout. Rather nice. Cask (handpump), Head of Steam, Euston, London NW1.
