Bottle [500ml] shared with HogTownHarry, GregClow, jerc & mabel -- c/o GregClow. March 9. Pours a slightly hazy orange-amber with an average size frothy off-white head. Aroma of caramel malt, fruit and some butteryness. Flavour of caramel malt, a bit buttery and with some light hops. Average bodied. Just O.K.

Nice pillowy head, pours a copper/brown that’s very nice. Aroma is quite nicely balanced between some initial caramel and the good hoppiness I’m looking for in this bitter. Taste is a lot nuttier than I expected, but the hop does come through in the end. Palate is OK, not a lot of aftertaste, but a solid beer nonetheless.

Pours a dark amber color with an off white head that dissipates quickly but leaves nice lace. Smell is toffee on the nose. Taste is a balanced malt body with toffee and finishes with a smooth bitterness. Gets better as it warms up.

October 30, 2011 - Volo Cask Days 2011 - gravity cask. Slightly hazy deep amber-gold with a smallish frothy white head. Smells quite floral, weak dishwater grain, wort-sweet and a little harsh (6-). Taste is a bit fusel and harsh, wort sweetness and overly floral. Light body and carbonation, harsh finish, not too good.

(Originally written for the Spring 2012 issue of TAPS Magazine.) When drinking a bitter, my needs are generally pretty simple: I want a beer that’s well-balanced, flavourful without being aggressive, and enjoyable enough that I wouldn’t mind following it directly with another (and perhaps another after that). Judged using that criteria, Picaroons Best Bitter is a prime example. The aroma is initially sweet, with notes of toasted nuts and roasted marshmallow, supported by a slight earthiness and a suggestion of dried leaves. The flavour is straightforward and simple – just as it should be – opening with toffee and walnut, presenting a bit of woodsmoke in the middle, and finishing long with twiggy hops. A good, honest, moreish ale.

Big thanks goes to Rejean for this. Pours a deep copper caramel with a moderate frothy off white top. Aroma is faint but caramel and earthy, flowery hops. Taste is smooth, caramel, a little nutty and a deep earthy hop flavours. Easily drinkable.

Tap in Saint John Ale House, NB. Classic bitter copper brown appearance with white head. I actually thought this was pretty decent - good interplay of ceral/nutty malts and some gentle hopping. Pleasantly bitter, very sessionable. But which idiot made it over 5%? These beers are meant to be 3.5-4% so you can drink them all night.

Hazy amber, creamybeige head. Huge diacetyl nose, same but somewhat less in palate.Nothing but hops and diacetyl, one dimensional, lacks malt balance. The only reason it scored this high was due to the appearance.
