argo0 (6230), Washington DC, USA Aug 18, 2008 Beige head atop brown-black body. Aroma is medium sweet, coffee, anise. Taste is moderately sweet, coffee, light anise, acetone. Light-medium body. acrdz (4376), Boulder, Colorado, USA Jul 14, 2008 Dark cola brown, clear, with a tan head. Flavor is basic chocolate malt, roast, some nuts, some dry, cracked grains and a light touch of sweetness that grows over the middle... chewy, chalky, just enough to cancel out the sticky, oily, sweetness. Not terrible, but not good. The brown ale and red ale from-tap blends were hideously bad. jcwattsrugger (4045), Florida and, New Jersey, USA Jul 15, 2007 1752 Stout (AKA Stonewall Stout)-on tap-pours a tan head and dark brown color. Aroma is mild dark malt. Taste is mild dark malt, faint hops, ok carbonation. Medium body, more like a light brown ale. Nothing bad, but nondescript. Earlier Rating: 7/15/2007 Total Score: 2.3 on tap-pours a light tan head and brown color. Made with ½ pilsner and ½ stout. Earlier Rating: 7/15/2007 Total Score: 2 on tap-pours an offwhite head and orangey brown color. Made with ¾ pilsner and ¼ stout. Apple cider with some hops. hopscotch (4588), Vero Beach, Florida, USA Jul 12, 2006 Draft... Hazy orange ale with a small, creamy, off-white head. Rich, malty flavor and aroma with mild apple esters (maybe acetaldehyde), chocolate, caramel and vinous notes (dry sherry). Earthy, spicy hops in the nose alone. Well-bittered for balance. Medium-bodied with lively carbonation. Short, crisp, clean finish. Earlier Rating: 7/12/2006 Total Score: 2.8 Draft... Murky amber ale with orange highlights and a small, creamy, off-white head. Good retention. Chocolatey, apple nose with earthy, spicy hops. Malty, toasted flavor. Good balance. Milk chocolate notes and apple esters (maybe acetaldehyde). Very pleasant. Medium-bodied and astringent with fizzy carbonation. Finishes crisp, a little fruity and then dry. Earlier Rating: 3/20/2006 Total Score: 2.5 Draft... Murky, prune-colored ale with a small, creamy, white head. No smell at all. Decently balanced, but so very thin. Almost nondescript except for a brief glimpse of chocolate. Medium-bodied and watery with medium carbonation. Finishes tangy with just a whisper of sweetness. This is a nut brown ale. Nothing STOUT about it. chris_o (4409), London, Greater London, England Jul 5, 2006 Updated: Aug 20, 2008Apple Valley Red Ale More amber than red really. Some earthy notes but not a lot of malt character. Too many of the Piccadillys beers I tried were rather similar, without a lot of clout. Clean but a bit short of flavour. Its a new brewery and a nice place, so lets hope they are still feeling their way and will realise that the beers need rather more presence. Earlier Rating: 7/5/2006 Total Score: 2.4 Fredericktown Brown Ale. On tap at the brewpub. The stout was more like a brown ale and this brown ale was more like - well - a light brown ale. Perhaps in a Newcastle Brown style. Like most of the beers, this was clean but rather underpowered and short of impact. Not really anything to take too much exception to, but not much to hold the interest either. Early days so, hopefully, they’ll get the message that the beers need beefing up a bit. Earlier Rating: 7/1/2006 Total Score: 2.7 1752 Stout I would concur entirely with the others on this but for the fact I had the same brewer’s brown ale at the same time. Darkish brown colour with a hint of red. Distinctly pale for a stout. Not much aroma - some roasty malt. More light roast malt on the palate with just a hint of powdery chocolate. But all a bit thin and wishy washy for a stout. In fact the first thing the server said when I ordered it was "Its not a thick stout like Guinness", so I guess they’ve had some comments about how thin it is. Not unpleasant, just not enough presence.
