0.5 AROMA 1/10 APPEARANCE 1/5 TASTE 1/10 PALATE 1/5 OVERALL 1/20
It poured a clear golden liquid with a small foam that left some lacing. It didn’t have any odor at all. Tasted like a cheap kind of sparkled water.

2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Bottle, 5.6%. Weak grassy hop aroma. Clear dark golden colour. Stable white head. The flavour does have some OK grassy hops, but it is also a little rough. Good mouthfeel.

Rather sweet brew, lots of soft fruit and flowers.
Boiled veg - carrots, califlower.
Not the first beer to seek out in Latvia!

2.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
UPDATED: JAN 16, 2014 Tap (Alus Arsenals, Riga) (6:4:6:4:12=3.2)
Milky grains, plenty in aroma, but tons in the taste. So milky and soft. Has an interesting quirk as you swallow, but it’s Piebalgas, you expect some quirks. I think this is what the brewer intended, so putting more weight behind this rating.
Rerate of: 500ml bottle (3:2:3:2:5=1.5)
Mid yellow, thin head. Slightly light mushroomy aroma, but not much. Passable mouthfeel, gives an early warning that there’s a pungent hoppiness and some maltiness. When swallowed, it leaves something somewhere between iffy and dodgy in your mouth, hard to describe where on that spectrum it lies. Some aspects aren’t a complete disaster, it’s definitely made from ingredients that make beer. And dead rats. Finish alas takes some of the more unpleasant aspects of the taste, and punishes you even more. I’m left with rubber or plastic, and grass.
rerate of Draught (?, Kuldiga) (3-2-1-1-2=0.9)
Light gold, thin head. Pungent aroma. Outrageous taste - bitter and super-nasty. John liked it, and it wasn’t off. Just horrid. Fishy. Metallic.

3.6 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottled beer. Real good! My favorite Latvian beer. Beginning is sweet and malty and end is bitter and hoppy.

500 ml bottle, bought in Riga, as "Piebalgas Alus Piebalga". ABV is 5.6%. This is a "gaisais alus" (= pale beer). Unpasteurised. Pale golden colour, large and lasting white head. Sweetish malty and slightly fruity aroma, hints of honey. Sweet malty flavour, too sweet for a pale lager. Notes of honey. Alcohol is noticeable. Some hops in the finish. Unusual lager, but not undrinkable.
