Draft... DLD’08... This beer rocks!... Pours pitch black with a mid-sized, creamy, khaki-colored head. Fantastic retention. The aroma is of chocolate and sourmash with intoxicating vanilla pipe tobacco and coconut. Full-bodied with a silky mouthfeel and pillow-soft carbonation. Lots of acidic sourmash and mildly sweet chocolate. Very smooth and mellow with no alcohol burn. The wood has rid the Big Black Mariah of any “rough-around-the-edges” aspects. Chocolaty, bourbony, lightly tart, woodsy finish. World class beer!

FoBAB 2010: Mahogany to deep brown hue, minimal head nor lace (this is an Imperial Stout?) The aroma is a bit fishy and funky, herbal, grassy, coffee, chocolate, walnut and earthy tobacco esters. The taste has some nice meaty and woody smoke, earthy yeast undertone, sweet malts, vanilla snaps and moderate bourbon influences before a weird pungent fruity finish (apricot, mango, pineapple). The mouth feel is smooth and slightly warming. An okay brew but not up to the hype. Too weird and all over the place. (Oh, it is more Imperial Porter than Stout IMO)

F0BAB 2010: It p0ured a dark br0wn/mah0gany b0dy and was quite headless. The ar0ma had a t0uch 0f sm0ke, s0me ch0c0late, and B0urb0n. The taste was sturdy 0n the b00ze, n0t 0verp0wering, lightly r0asted malt, s0me ch0c0late, a bit 0ffish. N0t bad, but I was lead t expect m0re.

Rich chocolate, bourbon and alcohol aroma. Balanced, though perhaps going a little towards underbittered at times. Very, very nice. Finishes off with a chocolate liqueur fade.

Sampled at FoBAB 2010. You know I had to try a beer named after a Tom Waits song. Black pour with nice tan head. Aroma of bourbon, smoke, spice. Chocolate, some nuts. Flavor is smokey bourbon chocolate. Vanilla, oak, all really nice. Full mouthfeel. great beer.

Finally got a chance to try this one at FoBAB 8. Of note, this is actually a strong porter made with smoked malt. Nose is smokey and nice. Earthy and chocolate, barbecue and some nice vanilla bourbon notes. The bourbon is very restrained, which is fantastic. It balances the beer out very well. Nice smokiness to the body that really ties it all together. Fantastic beer and one of my favorites from Piece!

On tap (thanks to___ for breakin’ this out). Plenty of booze and vanilla with a shitload of bourbon. Hard to believe this came from a dry Woodford Reserve barrel. I get some orange in here which I suspect comes from the Cascades.

Big thanks for the chance to try this beer! Pours black with a light, lasting tan head. Smell is lightly roasty and big bourbon with not much alcohol at all. Taste is rich, roasty bourbon and super smooth. Very drinkable and no heat from the alcohol getting in the way. Fantastic beer.
