hopscotch (4386), Vero Beach, Florida, USA May 14, 2008 Draft… DLD’08… Very dark (almost black) brown ale with an orange tint. Small, creamy, quickly vanishing head. The aroma is a haze of chocolate, banana, sweet dark fruit and coffee grounds. Full-bodied and chewy with modest carbonation. Chocolate and black malt sweetness. Alcohol, tannin and hop bitterness lingers. Warming, bittersweet, mocha finish.
DragonStout (1139), Orlando, Florida, USA Jul 12, 2008 Had on tap at the brewery. For a Belgian Strong this poured awfully dark.Everything else about this was great.Lots of sweet, dark fruits on the nose with hints of caramel and chocolate. The flavor was slightly warming with dark fruit sweetness. This finished off with a nice warming feeling.Great job on this! Ughsmash (2835), Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA May 28, 2008 On tap at Piece. Poured very deep brown with a tall, creamy initial cap of beige head. The aroma picked up rich darker chocolate, licorice, and caramel with a peppery yeast strain and some earthy notes.. more chocolate with warmth.. different and intriguing. The flavor had warm chocolate and some licorice zestiness upfront with rising peppery yeast and dry floral bitterness as it progressed.. alcohol spikes on the back and is a bit too sharp at the finish.. overall tasty and engaging. Carbonation was too high in here.. nice sweet/spicy contrasts.. interesting choice of maltage. I enjoyed this. red éric (1379), montréal, Quebec, Canada May 27, 2008 This beer is an imperial sout, in fact is an irish stout aged in whisky barrels, deep pitch black color, with a tiny tan-colored head, with a sweet roasted malt, mochaish nose, with a hint of black currant fruitiness, with some vanilla oakiness accents, with a faint chocolate praline aroma follows through on a full-bodied palate with a warmth, roasty, fruity, chocolatey, vanilla, oaky, whiskyish character, with a subtle bourbon-like accent with some dark roasted coffee bean flavors, some dark dried fruity notes of raisin, fig and plum, leading towards smooth roasty, vanilla warming finish. When i was there, this beer was served way too cool, for what it is. sneagrams3 (1342), St. Louis, Missouri, USA May 19, 2008 Tasted 4/30/08. Pt.3 of the sampler. Hazy with a dark brown hue. No light. Trace beige head. Toasty floral nose. Caramel and blueberies. Rather full bodied with a big roast. Tight citrus flavor. Fantastic yeast character. Good bitterness with a peppery yeast flavor. Cocoa cola and citrus juxtaposition. Toasty with an anise note. Tart sour fruity esters. Dark fruit and vanilla malts. Moderate dark roast. Me like! hombrepalo (403), Chicago, Illinois, USA May 19, 2008 On tap @ Piece. This is a belgian black? Wow, would have guessed porter. Dark brown pour, light tan head. Yeasty nose with some carmel, licorish and chocolate aromas. Dark fruityness taste a bit carbonated and sweet for me. Interesting and strong beer! Go Piece!
