Clear amber golden colour, white head. Malty aroma, caramel, light chestnuts. Sweet flavour, caramel. Sweet finish, hint of syrup. Quite decent actually. Bit aged bottle, best before end 2015.

Corsican amber lager flavoured with chestnuts - this is a new concept to me. Pours a clear, warm, ’autumny’ orange blonde with vivid sparkling supporting a thin but stable, moussy, off-white head breaking in the middle but retaining on the edges. Sweet and malty aroma of butterscotch, caramel candy, sweet chestnuts indeed, hazelnut oil, dry cookies, damp cloth, autumn leaves, honey, orange peel; the cara malts blend in nicely with the soft, volatile chestnut bouquet. Clean, crisp onset, low in esters as can be expected from a lager, sweetish with smooth and slick mouthfeel, medium carbonation, caramelly and explicitly toasted malt profile, straightforward but pleasant, with a subtle chestnut sweetness to it, though it is hard to distinguish this from the nutty malt character as such. Finishes in more bittersweet, toasted, juicy maltiness with a pleasant, well-balanced leafy and peppery hop bitterness rounding things off and leaving a bitter aftertaste which reminds me more of an American amber lager than of a Vienna. Pretty simple beer, but you do not see an awful lot of amber lagers in Europe anymore and the addition of chestnuts, however subtle, is a nice touch which lends this an ethereal, pleasantly perfumey bouquet. Among all those complex ales, it is good that decent, well-made lagers like this still exist, the more beer diversity we have at our disposal, the better.

UPDATED: SEP 24, 2015 Bottle at Café des Amis. Clear chestnut in the aroma, otherwise pretty standard, but not bad.

Bottle from supermarket in Corsica. Pours clear amber with a head that disappears quickly and leaves no lacing. The aroma has malt, caramel, but I can’t find the chestnuts. The taste is sweet and medium bitter, with a sweet finish. Not a bad brew, but rather boring.

33ml bottle from the Curious Hop, Otley. Yeah, ok, this is weird but pretty unique and in no way flawed. So, I like it. Looks like a lightish brown ale with an off-white egg-white style head on it. Light but nice, and smooth. You can really taste the chestnuts too. Slightly sweet, biscuts with vanilla (nilla wafers?) and closet in the aftertaste. Not sure if I’d rush out to buy it again but it’s one I enjoyed drinking, which means I enjoyed it for at least a bit more than just a novelty factor.

Bottle from somewhere in France. Poured a clear medium amber with a frothy white head. The aroma is malt, toffee caramel. The flavour is moderate bitter light sweet with a woody resin, floral, light hop bitter palate. Medium bodied with soft carbonation.

Belle couleur ambrée claire, limpide, fine mousse blanche.
