3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Pike IPA has a medium, creamy, cream-colored head, an opaque, orange appearance, some visible bubbles stuck to the side of the glass, and a bit of lacing left behind. The aroma is of musty, piney hops, hop oil, some citrus, and malt. Taste is of alcohol, piney oil, dank, wet hay, white bread and white bread crust, lots of hop bitterness, especially in the aftertaste, and a bit of citrus peel. Mouthfeel is medium to heavy and soft, and Pike IPA finishes wet, heavy, sloshy, and drinkable. Overall, this is one of those heavy, mushy Indian Pale Ales. It’s still remarkable and worth trying. Pretty straight forward IPA. Some citrus, lots of hops and a hint of floral. A bit heavy on the bitterness but otherwise just another IPA.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
[3/3/15] Draught at Dungeness Bay Seafood House in Seattle-Tacoma airport. Clear reddish amber. Aroma of malt, slightly caramelly, piney and citric hops and a buttery note. Sweetish malt flavor with some caramel, a mild buttery touch, a bit of toast, citric and piney hops and a bitter finish. Medium-bodied. A bit buttery but still OK.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Fairly large off-white head. Somewhat dark Amber color.
Aroma - hops dominate with pine and citrus aromas. Light malt presence also with bread aromas.
Slightly oil and creame textures; a long bitter finish. Average sweetness.
Overall a pretty good IPA with good hop flavors, but with a bit of mild bready malt balance.

2.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20
This does not strike me as a beer that was brewed to a terribly high standard. It’s pretty bland for an IPA to be honest. It’s clear yellow orange color with a head of medium bubbles. It smells of minerals and pine needles. It’s dry and slightly watery w/ medium carbonation. I got this on draft but it somehow seems a little skunky or perhaps the hop variety was just a little bit catty. Finish is fairly bitter but not too harsh. This isn’t at all terrible or anything but drinkable is the most superlative compliment I can pay to it.

Aside: I was presented with my original bottle of this nearly 20 years back by Mr. Belmont. I didn’t drink craft beer at the time and left it on my office shelf as a momento. Poor decision. Good label and logo on the bomber. Hazy, maplewood or caramel colored brew. Aroma is malt forward, a little honeyish, a little vanilla and toffee up front with a sprucey hoppiness and slightly toasted tones following. Pleasant. Drier than it smells, vanilla tones on the lips, some slight tin, almost-juniper tones towards the back. A little wood, a little toast, enough hops to keep you interested, but not enough to put you in the hospital. Medium heavy mouthfeel. Woody, dry toffee finish. Enjoyable. Habersham’s Beverage Warehouse, Abercorn, Savannah. On fire sale - $2/bomber, what a deal!
