22oz bottle. Brown pour, with a slightly reddish hue, with an off-white head. Aroma of caramel, peat, earth and tootsie rolls. Flavor of peat and earth, with caramel and smoke. Medium body. Peat and smoke linger on the palate. Nice.

Almost clear, bronze with a filmy, white top that doesn’t last. Smokey malt, nicely balanced with hops a fruit to contrast some toffee malt fill the aroma, while a biscuity and smokey malt flavour are in perfect balance with hops flavour and bittering and toffee malt sweetness. Medium body with mild carbonation and a clean, yet sweet finish.

Lightly hazed brown copper, thin head, decent lace. Aroma of tangy fruit and light caramel malt. Flavor is bolder than the aroma - caramel malt is prevalent. Refreshing tangy fruit around the edges. Citrus hops flavor is in the background, but very complimentary. Nice balance. Body north of medium, moderate carbonation. Smooth drinking.

From the bottle.
Pours a light orange with an aroma that seems limited when the beer is cold but which develops a pleasing complexity as it warms. The mouth is rich without being heavy, and lively in its carbonation.
The taste is warm malt, with a creme brule sweetness and hints of seaweed, smoke, oak, and cognac. The alcohol, while noticable, adds to the richness. Rather than forsaking the hops, the brewers have balanced the rich malt with enough hops to provide a spicy complement to the other favors to round out the finish with a pleasing bitter note.
Thi s is a first-rate beer, and probably my favorite of Pike’s offerings.

Reviewed 7/24/2009 (bottle):
Cloudy brown color body, small off-white head, quickly diminishing. Malty sweet aroma, syrupy. Earthy. English malty taste, biscuity. Sweet, but not syrupy. Scotchy taste, maybe butterscotch. Not bad, not too headache inducing.

UPDATED: AUG 25, 2009 Marty McFly could sum up this ale pretty well "Heavy.." Light on flavor offerings, this one really hits you full force with its strength. A real one-trick-pony with some nice sweet fruit essence combined with its heavy malt body.
Re-rate - Caramel maltiness along with sweet toffee. Sizable peat and earth character.
3.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 bitbucket (2112) - Kirkland, Washington, USA - JUN 4, 2006
Bottled. Pours a coppery amber with a dimishing lacy head. Aroma is malt, fruit and sort of ’earthy’ hops. Smooth and creamy medium/full body with light carbonation. Taste starts smokey-sweet, nutty malt with a dry, piney hop finish that lingers a bit. Well rounded.

I very much enjoyed this beer. Very nice aroma, with some citrus and earthy tones. Reddish amber color. Flavor is rich with caramel malts, and a nice hoppy and peaty finish. Perhaps a bit too sweet, and it could use a bit more peat for a scotch ale, but nonetheless a very nice, enjoyable beer.
3.7 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 Sask89 (326) - Regina, Saskatchewan, CANADA - DEC 27, 2009
UPDATED: JAN 23, 2010 This pours a hazy maple brown colour with minimal head. It has an aroma of malts and various fruits. The taste is slightly bitter but also had lots of fruit like peach and apples and was malty. The finish was abrupt and the carbonation present is nice. Overall I found this beer quite good, definately worth a try, great aroma.
