kenb (1100), Oregon, USA Jul 29, 2009 22 oz bottle via LS. Pours a clear amber with an average beige head. Nose is spicy and fruity..peppercorns, bananna, even some smoke. Taste is of white peppercrons, bannanna, hickory, perhaps some noble hop character, some ginger, coriander and some lime, some subtle chocolate malts, ending with those peppercorns. Taste is quite quite complex. I have never tasted anything quite like it, i will say it grows on me with each sip. Body is medium/full, carbonation is medium.
I think people are under-rating this because of what they expect from a Triple. I am not a big triple fan so am only rating it on the quality of beer it is....and for being unique and tasty! shigadeyo (2210), Harrison, Ohio, USA Jul 25, 2009 10/17/2007: Pike Monk’s Uncle Tripel Ale is lightly fruity and smells a bit like apple cider. It has a hzy golden color and a foamy, mostly lasting off-white head what provides thick lacing. The fruity malt flavor has a mild to moderate amount of bitterness as well as a bit of yeastiness. It also seems slight metallic. Overall this is a decent beer, but seems slightly sub-par for a Tripel.
22 fl. oz. bottle (OG 1.075 / IBU 38 / 9.0% Alc/Vol.) from bitbucket via trade. Thanks Bob! Rating #78 for this beer.
raphael (411), Portland, Oregon, USA Jul 25, 2009 first and worst beer I had at the OBF. who wants to start with a malt liquor. yeah its a little better than OE or SR, the hint of body, chemicals more organic than inorganic, slightly darker yellow. a nose peeling aroma. mmmbeer (737), Austin, Texas, USA Jul 24, 2009 22 oz. bottle served in trappist glass- poured transparent light copper, a small white cloud with some frog eyes for a head atop the liquid surface accompianed with a white ring, near zero carbonation. Aroma of candi sugar, yeast, and plums. Hits the mouth with a a wide medium body, malt is there and is enjoyable, alcohol hits you like a frieght train, middle has some mild pepper spice that tries to sneak in from the alcohol wave, finish is warming and has some weak dark fruit notes that linger- but at least it is pleasant. Middle of the road brew from a style that I’m really starting to enjoy. But at $3.99, who cares! tiggmtl (4307), Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada Jul 19, 2009 Some higher alcohols and lightly solventy undertones to the fruity and yeasty aroma. Hazy golden body is topped by a decent white head that recedes to a lasting cover with some lacing. Yeasty and peppery with some mint, pineapple, peaches, oranges and clove notes to the sweet flavour. Bitterness is quite pronounced. Medium light body with lightly prickly carbonation. Tulip glass. Cellar temperature. Bottle purchased at Brewery Creek in Jul-09. Vertical Bacon Strips (874), Edmonton, Alberta, Canada Jul 18, 2009 Clear orange gold, a small white cap and very little retention. Nice yeasty aroma with sweet fuit, orange candy, lemon and good spice that is duller and less potent than I expected (not a bad thing). Hey, this has a really good bitter spice up front in the flavour, Yeast, pepper, some clove. In the middle you can pick out some grapefruit and orange but that fades slowly into more spice and a solid, well matched bitterness. The bitterness is pretty good. As it warms the ornage and citrus peeks out a bit more and is well mixed in with the bitter/spice mix... sometimes the spice is dull. Foamy, tons of carbonation, medium bodied, soft, solid spiced finish with good bitterness. There is more fruit near the bottom of my beer instead of extra bitterness. This might be the best US Tripel that I’ve tried. SudsMcDuff (1691), was CapeTown,SA-now Houston, Texas, USA Jul 17, 2009 ok, price reduced to $3.99 ... .
