4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
(22 oz. (2009) from Grain and Vine) Pours cloudy/hazy dark reddish-amber. Thin tan head. Aroma of candy-malt, fruit, toffee, bit of booze. Mouthfeel quite smooth, medium-full, buttery, a touch sticky on the back end. A syrupy film and weepy rings and dabs of lacing melt down the inside of the glass. Flavor of toffee, chocolate, candy-malt, caramel, touch of fruit. Smokey-malt character. Alcohol warmth oozes out but not overly hot.

3.2 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
UPDATED: NOV 26, 2012 Pours a light brown, with ample but fast disappearing head. Aroma is mostly sweet and malty. Primary taste note is bitter hoppiness, with the malt pretty well in the background. Finishes with a long lingering hop bitterness. Not bad, but just not the sort of barely wine I like as is lack complexities and is skewed heavily toward the bitter side.
Update: Sampled a bottle from cellar after 19 months. Really not very good. Still pretty bitter, but has an off taste that I do not like. Not a good cellar candidate.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle. Heavy malt aromas of bread and roasted, light to moderate cooked orange for the hops, leather for the yeast, with raisin, date, brown sugar and a hint of vinegar in the background. Head is small, frothy with some bigger bubbles, light beige with some slippery lacing and good legs. Color is clear deep mahogany. Flavor starts moderately sweet and acidic, then finishes lightly to moderately sweet and acidic and lightly bitter. Palate is medium to full, oily with a soft to lively carbonation. A little out of balance for a Barley Wine, but it does have some nice aromas and the flavor while robust seems a little contrary to the style.

2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
2011 vintage. Sampled on 4/12/2012. This barley wine pours a slightly hazy dark brown color from a 22 oz bottle. Small to medium sized white foamy head. The aroma is caramel and sweet, bready and biscuit. A medium to full bodied Barley Wine. The malts are caramel, bready and sweet. The hops are piney, earthy and herbal. Decent carbonation. Very malt forward Barley Wine, yet there are some piney hops in the background. I am not sure that the combination works well here. It comes off a little astringent and the hop bitterness seems to be combating the malt sweetness instead of contrasting it. The aftertaste is more like an IPA and it is kind of throwing me off. Not sure if I like this one. Mouthfeel is full. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is bitter.

4.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
huge 22oz 2011 bottle claiming 9.9%. pours a clear amber with a small, stable, beige head. caramel and big citrus/pine nose. american, west coast, style BW. in the tradition of big foot only slightly less hoppy and slightly more malty. piney and citrusy up front, then turning sweet with caramel and toast, but not quite smoky. abv is tame for the most part. a real good one from pike, if not their best work! awesome BW!

2.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 9/20
The aroma is sweet and hoppy with brown sugar and metallic hops. The appearance is amber with a small head. The taste is like the aroma with an astringent finish. The palate is smooth. Overall it’s not that great of a beer but not undrinkable.
