Commercial Description:
This beer has a somewhat more noticeable bitterness, and its mixture of malts and rice makes it rather dry. With a refreshing feeling, balanced bouquet and full body, it works very well as an accompaniment to food. Pilsen has been on the national beer market since 1888.

Bottle from a March 2004 trip to Costa Rica. One shade of yellow short of clear. An almost painful flavor with minimal yeast aroma. Cardboard, dry, and not refreshing.

Seemed to go well with the food of Costa Rica. When not drinking Bavaria light , this was the ticket.

Bought and tasted in Costa Rica - side to side with Imperial, Pilsen and Bavaria Gold. A: All were fine for the style with good carbonation that produced a nice head. 4s all around. S: Imperial had a strong cooked corn smell with other vegetal notes - 2.5. Pilsen had light vegetal notes but mostly a simple grainy aroma - 3.0. Bavaria had no discernable vegetal or off notes and had a simple grainy aroma - 3.5. T: Imperial was a touch harsh at the front with bitterness and hotness. Refreshing the rest of the way through. 2.5. Pilsen was simple throughout, but refreshing. Light bitterness. 3.0. Bavaria was the least bitter and had a touch more focus on bready malts (just barely). 3.5. M: Imperial came on slightly strong but was otherwise fine. 3.0. Pilsen - 3.5. Bavaria - 3.5. D: Given that these are meant for a hot Costa Rican day, they all drink well. I’ll give a slight nod to Pilsen and Bavaria. Imperial - 3.5. Pilsen and Bavaria - 4.0.

Ok, this bottle claims to be 5.1 % ABV, not 4.5 %, but whatever, In general, refer to my review of Cerveza Imperial, and then add the following: "Slightly better than Cerveza Imperial, and more booze too."

475 ml can. I thought this one had a bit of a nasty taste to it, kind of like a Milwaukee’s Best or something comparable. Minimal aroma, both aroma and flavor are a little skunky. Imperial is brewed by the same company and certainly more readily available than this one, so I see no reason to go with this one other than to say you’ve had it.

Had a couple of these in Limon; SO hot and humid on the day that a couple of these coldies were most welcome. Tasted a trifle watery and appearance was slightly urine-like. But, better than a swill.

When your in CR this is the beer you choose when you’re going for maximum buzz, it’s got a little more kick than the imperial. Other than that... it basically tastes like a bad malt liquor.

350 ml can enjoyed after a Canopy Tour / Zip Line excursion. Pour is clear golden with a one inch white head. Aroma of malt and corn. The corn smells grainy and unnatural. Taste is a bit cleaner than the nose, but is still the malt and corn. Palate is thin, a touch watery with a finish that featured the corn in an unpleasant way.
