mullet (763), Melbourne, Australia Oct 31, 2007 Pretty bloody dark stuff - the darkest of all the imperial stouts on the day. Crazy aromas jump out of the glass at you - blue cheese, tar, tobacco, burnt toast, sour fruits and cream cheese like some Wig & Pen stuff. Insanely dry, ashy flavour, lots of fruity acidity and a leathery, tarry, bitter finish. Weirdly fantastic stuff. Very much in the British style with all the weird yeast- and malt-derived characters as per my very limited understanding of such things. It really stood out in comparison to all the other beers for the extra layers of flavour, where the others offered more linear intensity. A brilliant beer from a brewery which I thought had shut years ago! You’ve gotta love that. Dunno if it’d go with Stilton though - it tastes just like the stuff. I’d go with Parmagiano Reggiano. Thanks to Stew41 for bringing it.
donfardz64 (83), Wellington, New Zealand Aug 5, 2008 Pours pitch black, black head. Aromas of burnt malt, caramel sweetness. Very heavy beer, strong flavours of bitter burnt malt, chocolate and alcohol. Definately a sipper. jimthechap (122), Christchurch, New Zealand Jul 1, 2008 GIVE ME MORE! This beer is a favourite amongst myself and the Denny Cranes. We taste beer regularly and salute the brewing genius that is Roger Pink. This beer is dense, chocolately and the epitomy of what is to be appreciated as the Imperial Russian Stout Style.
I’d knight you if I could Roger. Sully (1363), Woolloomooloo, New South Wales, Australia Apr 1, 2008 Bottle 1135. It was with some unnecceessary surprise that I glug glugged this from the bottle. Initiial dark and swampy apprearance with an expreeso crema head. It has an oily nose and port like presence. The mouthfeel is beeeeeg with some degree of tang that detracts from the fullness of body, I guess you could say it is somewhat trunkated. There is evidence of the plum pudding flavours that pachyderm a collective punch. Another elephant to lie down for a while but never forget. TheGrandMaster (1452), Auckland, New Zealand Jan 10, 2008 Bottle out of The GrandMaster’s homecoming box (courtesy of yalnikim), pours a thick black with a foamy brown head that darkest I have ever seen.A sweet oaky aroma, tones of whiskey (The GrandMistress thought mroe red wine), with chocolate, raisins, and pepper. A bitter gravelly palate, with chocolate-touched roasted malt flavours. The finish is short and dry, and a bite of sourness. Something just diesn’t click for me to rate this any higher than above-average. beer_ledgend (796), Meadowbank Auckland, New Zealand Jan 3, 2008 Bottle 1037. Black in colour with toffee coloured head. Really thick could almost hold up a teaspoon. coffee and port flavours, lingers for ages.
